It's an unusual form of
successful suicide, but not unheard of. People who attempt it via stabbing don't always succeed, and when they do it's rarely from a single attempt, but often due to loss of blood from multiple stab wounds as they "try to get it right".
Homicides by sharp object also invariably result in more than one stab injury, as well as the victim usually having "defensive wounds" on their hands and forearms from attempting to fend off the blow.
A single, fatal, stab wound is therefore quite possibly a suicide, rather than homicide.

I saw a 'based on a true story' type movie recently called 'Vatel' where this guy was working for the King of France as the 'master of ceremonies', or some such, for all the fancy royal shin-digs. He killed himself by stabbing because the fish didn't arrive on time.
