That's what started it - people from out of the area telling visitors it was "their" beach.
Doesn't make the violence against the police right, of course, but the root cause is the smacktards trying to claim a beach as their own. I think it's good that people are still willing to stand up for such things, though a peaceful turn out would have made the point much more eloquently...
