Actually, nothing is ever said in CoS that implies that the sword was in Dumbledore's office before it came out of the hat. There isn't enough room in the hat for the sword, and the hat was empty when Harry put it on, and when he begged for help, the hat moved as though it was being squeezed, and the sword appeared from it.

The hat functions like a portal, and delivers the sword from wherever it is when it's called for.

I really enjoyed most of the book, although I found some sections irritatingly directionless. The three of them in hiding, wandering around the country with no aims or ideas was frustrating. At least in the earlier books, if they weren't making any progress with the main plotline, there were classes to go to and Quidditch to play and other things to keep the story moving.

But once that bit was over, and things really started happening, it was fantastic. I was impressed by the complexity of Dumbledore's unfolding plans.

And like many other people, I'm sure, I'm quietly proud that I was right in my guesses about why Snape killed Dumbledore, and why Dumbledore trusted him *g*

Oh, and I've always thought the "Harry Potter is Satanic" brigade were way off, but after this book I think they need to take another look...there were certain parallels between this and the incredibly Christian "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" that are so far from satanic, it's not funny.
