That actually happened at the end of Half-Blood Prince, but the significance wasn't made clear till we found out all the extra stuff about wandlore, after Harry's wand broke.

Draco was the master of the Elder Wand because he disarmed Dumbledore before he was killed. Since Dumbledore never reclaimed his wand, and died shortly afterwards, that made the wand Draco's.
