If you're desperate to save money, and have time to spare its worth it.
The trains aren't overly reliable when it comes to timetables though (but then what's new!).
I got the train from Brisbane to Sydney - the train left two hours late and arrived 4 hours late. I sat next to a Canadian backpacker who had decided to travel around Australia by train, and he said that every single train he'd travelled on was late. He hadn't actually seen much of the country, other than out of the train window, as a result. (Why on earth he thought trains would be a good way to see a country as big as ours in 10 days is another story)
