Having never been to a Tripod Christmas show before, I wasn't quite sure what to expect (other than Christmas songs, duh). I was told that last year they did a Christmas-themed set, then followed up with a "normal songs" set afterwards. This year though, they hadn't had much time to prepare new Christmas material in between their Pod August Nights and now, so overall there was only one new song (I think? Someone who went last year clarify please) - [b:post_uid0]Christmas At The Centre Of The Earth[/b:post_uid0] (which we'd had a lovely preview of at my uni about a month ago ). The Spiegeltent is absolutely lovely - polished wooden floorboards, mirrors galore, stained glass windows and a mirrorball - but a lot smaller than I expected..... extremely fucking stuffy in there, too; I nearly passed out from dehydration. The set was very cute; a big inflatable Santa over on Yon's side ("Santa fully inflated when candy cane erect"), and a little, fully-decorated Christmas tree on Scod's side... not to mention the "Christmas box of mystery" behind Gatesy, placed on a big golden pillar. Other than [b:post_uid0]Christmas At The Centre Of The Earth[/b:post_uid0] and other Christmas tunes such as [b:post_uid0]I Hate Your Family[/b:post_uid0], [b:post_uid0]Christmas Down Under[/b:post_uid0], [b:post_uid0]Multiple Santa 'Xmas[/b:post_uid0], [b:post_uid0]Plastic Surgery For Christmas[/b:post_uid0] (note I am just making up a whole lot of song titles as I go along), [b:post_uid0]Fabian[/b:post_uid0] etc., they rehashed a lot of songs and sketches for the show. For example: * [b:post_uid0]Yon And His Flute[/b:post_uid0] - 'Xmas-themed songs such as Winter Wonderland  * [b:post_uid0]Shop[/b:post_uid0] - Christmas-related verses * [b:post_uid0]Bring Out The Swan[/b:post_uid0] - "bring out the box, bring out the box, the Christmas box of mysteryyyyyy!!!" * [b:post_uid0]Birthday Song[/b:post_uid0] - insert the word "Christmas" instead of "birthday" And then there were Pod August Night-era songs such as [b:post_uid0]Hot Dog Man[/b:post_uid0], [b:post_uid0]Ugly Men[/b:post_uid0], [b:post_uid0]I Don't Know Much About Sport[/b:post_uid0], etc. The setlist was the same on both nights, but the show on the second night was a lot tighter, and between-song banter was more funny and off-the-cuff. Personal highlight for me was [b:post_uid0]Little Drummer Boy[/b:post_uid0], which had been used in previous Christmas shows, but which I hadn't seen before. I'm a bit hesitant in saying this, but I was slightly disappointed with the fact that there was only one brand new song. I know they haven't had much time to come up with new stuff, and I appreciate the fact that the creative process is not just something that happens overnight, but yeah. Maybe I've seen Tripod so often that my standards for them are impossibly high. I did enjoy myself a lot more on the second night though; I tried viewing the show from my friend's perspective (my friend having never seen any of that material before, other than I Hate Your Family), and it was absolutely hilarious. :) Oh and how could I forget - they encored with [b:post_uid0]Sweet Caroline[/b:post_uid0]!! It did seem a little out of place, but to hear a Spiegeltent full of people singing along to it was quite something. Don't let me put you off though - if you haven't seen a Christmas show before, or if you never got to see any of the Pod August Nights... heck, if you just love the Tripod boys and can get down to one of the regional shows, then I recommend you do! :) (Edited by manda at 2:45 pm on Nov. 18, 2001)

Kez, if you go to the Bendigo show, do yourself and Caitlin a favour and request the "magma verse"... they'll know what you're talking about. [i:post_uid0]*has a moment's silence for the magma verse*[/i:post_uid0]

...You will if you go to the Bendigo show!!! The "magma verse" is an extension of my quote... it was in the original [b:post_uid0]Christmas At The Centre Of The Earth[/b:post_uid0], but it got axed (on our account, supposedly). :crap:
