Thumbs up The Chaser's War On Everything

From ABC.net.au

The Chaser's War On Everything

9:45pm Friday, February 17, 2006

George W. Bush waged a war on terror, but only The Chaser has had the vision and courage to wage a War On Everything. Over 27 weeks, from February 17 at 9.45pm, no target will be spared in the satirical team's new comedy show on ABC TV. The hitlist is comprehensive: John Howard, Telstra, the Pope, the Dalai Lama, Mother Theresa, Kim Beazley, Simone Warne and - most of all - those annoying people who write feeble hyperbole in TV press kits.

Filmed in front of a studio audience, the Logie Award-winning team of both CNNNN and The Chaser Decides, will be doing what they do best - confronting and lampooning key players from the world of politics, business, religion, media and culture. These signature Chaser ambushes will form the core of the new series - alongside news-of-the-week analysis, comedy sketches, and their uniquely irreverent field experiments such as:

* Can you book a dinner table in the US under the name bin Laden?

* How many times can you let your mobile phone ring during a Russell Crowe gig before he cracks it?

* And how would Virgin Blue's whacky and humorous in-flight announcements go down if you performed them verbatim at an actual comedy club?

The show will also feature regular segments such as Pursuit Trivia, testing the general knowledge of our politicians during a press conference; reviews of corporate videos; and The Ad Roadtest, where the team recreates scenarios from TV commercials to see if they work in real life.

Head of ABC TV Arts and Entertainment Courtney Gibson says: "ABC TV is proud to announce The Chaser team is coming out from behind the desks of CNNNN and The Chaser Decides, to walk tall in the studio and grace the TV comedy genre with a delightfully seditious edge. ABC TV viewers will be able to marvel at the menace they effect for half an hour every single week."

As in previous years, the Chaser team will include writer/performers Andrew Hansen, Chas Licciardello, Craig Reucassel, Chris Taylor, Julian Morrow and Dominic Knight. Charles Firth, will be the show's new American Correspondent.

The Chaser's War on Everything will be tough, bloody and unforgiving. Don't become the first casualty by not tuning in.

Well that sounds like hilarious, ground-breaking comedy.

It sounds great. I can't wait to see it.

I would say "yes", but I wouldn't want to do it in the South. My brethren are scary, which is why I don't live there.

In an intimate setting? I would say 2. But in a concert, would you even hear it? Or is the point that Crowe doesn't play really big shows?

I know the questions were rhetorical, but I am bored.

Did you hear what happened to the chaser boys outside the AWB inquiry?

they got into trouble for offering a fake cheque (from saddan husain) to one of the ministers, who took offence and reported them to the inquiry head, and passed the matter to police!! :o
anyone hear what happened next?

I got caught up with Olympic-y goodness and forgot to watch.

Did anyone remember? How was it?

(And if anyone knows if/when it's being repeated? ABC website only has "highlights" apparently. )

Thumbs up

I thought it was pretty darn good, and not just because I'm in love with the set.

A few of the skits were repeated from the pilot, but they were mixed in with some fresh ideas.

Both the AWB prank and the Leunig cartoon mishap were mentioned, but neither were shown for legal reasons. The first was covered particularly well.

Craig:"Wouldn't it be funny if the only person to go to jail from the AWB inquiry was Julian Morrow?"

I was also impressed by Chas's attempts to sneak meat into the Big Day Out.

They're not even repeating it on ABC2, their other digital channel. Media Watch gets replayed there about 4 or 5 times but no Chaser.
