you know what - i watched this - i use to friggen hate Dave Hughes so much - still don't like him, but he actually made me laugh - i went to one of his gigs back in 1999 and man he has come along way from lines like "I got this new shirt" so i was a little more impressed with him.

But i was just delighted to see another sexy beast on that show, and i am not talking about Hughes dad or brother!

'Delta Goodrem does a show in Athens for all the Hollywood stars,
But all her fame and fortune can't remove her cancer scars!'

Ah, Louie, what hath God wrought?

Some people on your list have on occasion delivered better shows than I've seen Hughesy do, but are nowhere near as consistent as Hughesie is; some of the others could possibly 'wipe the floor' with him.

The consistency is important: you wanna be able to take someone to a show and have them enjoy it after raving about the act. Some of those guys do not appeal across the board.

Dave Hughes isn't going to change my outlook on life or point out something remarkably, gloriously, deliciously true about how fucked up the human condition is, as some of my favourite comics do. Some people reckon he isn't funny at all, he just looks and talks funny. What can I tell you? I got to see him live at the Enmore and I laughed a lot. I think the comedy landscape would be lacking something vital without him. I don't know exactly what - I don't care to analyse it that closely. But I do remember Alexei Sayle once admitting that he used to resent Ben Elton until he realised there was indeed enough fame and success for everybody, and he ought to just buckle down and do whatever he wants to do and see where that takes him. Comedy's a broad church. There's room enough in it for Hughesy and his fans.

Of course, if Daniel Townes were reading this, his reply would be, "but you just love everyone, Dom".

i would favour people like fleety, adam hills and justin hamilton over him anyday however

The public certainly seems to like him, so he must be doing something right.
He isn't a "blue"* comedian. I love that he doesn't think he is somehow better than me because he has a microphone in his hand. At times, his laid back delivery is very funny. However, this special didn't showcase his talent as far as I could tell. But then, I bailed. It could have been shown later on.

There's also these things known as "personal opinions", you may have heard of them...

I'd argue that Dave Hughes isn't the best stand up working in Australia today. And that has nothing to do with his technique, his skills, his reliability or even how many other people will laugh themselves silly at him. It's because I don't find him that funny these days.

Mostly because I was overexposed to the same material from him at Glass House tapings, but whatever the reason, he doesn't make me laugh anything like as much as a lot of other comedians. And that automatically means I'm not going to call him "the best", and that I'm going to argue that he isn't.

You can think he's the best, but please, don't dispute my right to disagree with you about what I find funny.

Plenty of people do solo shows in the Melbourne Comedy Festival and then go straight back to open mikes. People even make money doing shows and then can't get paid gigs in clubs and pubs. They're still open micers.

You didn't answer the question. Who in particular is an open mic'er?

exactly, who do you qualify as an open micer??

wil has on occasion rocked up to open mics to test new material. so do most other comedians. hell billy connolly and robin williams have gatecrashed comedy gigs on tour under fake names and have gotten up during open mic spots.

I don't know that it's the 'origin' of the term, but I do know that Max Miller, 'The Cheeky Chappy'* - who is best considered a precursor (I just wrote 'pre-curser' - ie someone who swore before - and the Freudian slip is just as apt!) to Roy 'Chubby' Brown - used to ask his audience if they wanted to hear material from his blue book, or his red book. He claimed the red book had nice jokes, the blue book had naughty jokes. I've no idea if either book actually contained jokes, and if they did, whether they were the same or identical, but the audience only ever demanded material from the blue book, as Miller no doubt knew they would. And he never disappointed.

Hence, the argument might be made, Max Miller was 'working blue'.

It is used in Australia and definitely in the UK, as it is in the US.

*You used to be able to buy a two-disc set of Max Miller live on EMI UK's 'Comedy Collection' range (who also produced the two disc set of Woody Allen's stand-up, a compilation of Flanders & Swann's three albums, Stanley Holloway's monologues, a two disc [up til then, the most 'complete'] 'Beyond the Fringe' collection and a clutch of Good Show collections)

It also has a second meaning here, when combined with the word "true", as in "True Blue"... Which Dave Hughes is.

Lots of comedians will recycle thier best (and some of their worse) jokes....what do you thing Lano and Woodley's Goodbye show was..the best of their jokes!

Im not a massive fan of Dave, (obsessed with lano and woodley though lol), but yeah he's a great comedian. Ive only seen him on Glasshouse and the dvd. LIke the clean comedy that he does, unlike some others...eg Wil Anderson...though when he's not doing sick jokes he's quite good..Wil that is, not Dave.

Michael Chamberlain is coming to brisbane in March and he's doing some open-micing...so yeah all good, and its free!
