Not the Messiah

Move over Spamalot, Eric Idle has brought Life of Brian to the stage...

Not the Messiah

"Shorter than Handel, funnier than Handel, but obviously not as good theologically" Eric Idle

"It’s non-stop. Lots of flamboyant flourishes and finishes. And the most singularly odd impression of Bob Dylan ever attempted in a symphony hall" Luminato Press

Join Monty Python superstar Eric Idle and collaborator John Du Prez, the duo that unleashed Spamalot on the world, for their latest rambling adventure: Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy) - a retelling of Monty Python's Life of Brian and a direct spoof of Handel's famous oratorio Messiah.

It's a night of baroque 'n' roll on a grand scale, with a full orchestra, massed choir, bagpipers and classical soloists, all hosted by the Python frontman as narrator - a 'baritone-ish' soloist reprising some of his best-loved roles from the film, including Mr. Cheeky, a man in the crowd who asked if Mandy is a virgin, and the Lead Singer Crucifixee.

Expect pop, Welsh hymns, country and western, doo-wop, hip hop, Broadway, Greek chorus, Idle as Bob Dylan in his mumbling, electric guitar and harmonica phase, Idle beat-boxing to Hail to the Shoe (sung to the tune of the Hallelujah Chorus) and, of course, a raucous final singalong to Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.

Don't expect anything serious (if you want that, may we suggest you try the actual Messiah! )

Written by Eric Idle and John Du Prez.

Not the Messiah was commissioned by Luminato: Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. World Premiere performance in Roy Thomson Hall, Toronto, Canada on June 1, 2007 conducted by Toronto Symphony Orchestra Director Peter Oundjian.
