Followed by the "If I was Ian Thorpe, that'd be bad advice" thought... Followed by the "But if I was Thorpie I'd also be gay"... Followed by the "EWWWWWWWWWWW!" thought!

[/quote:post_uid0] akhm......I have many talents of my own. Most of which relate directly to televison. Just watching W.Anderson "read" made me cringe,( is just a personal view)- it just appeared unprepared hence unprofesional. i have certain expections when watching tv, probably higher expectations coming from GNWTV productions. its a good show, excellent concept- it was just a few small things that make you go hmmmm.

Personally, I've loved all the Glasshouse shows and absolutely pissed myself laughing at most of the content. *I began watching it, knowing it would be a bit rough to start off with. *But all good Aussie comedy shows start off that way. *Just look back on the early days of GNW or The Panel or Rove; they all had a few little bumps to iron out, but they improved as a bit of time went by. The thing is, The Glasshouse has a lot of potential to be a top quality, Aussie-made show. *So let's all be supportive of our local talent and this home-grown TV show, and give it a good chance to grow and flourish. *And just be thankful it's not another bloody crappy reality-TV show!! *steps of soapbox and sits back in corner*

But all good Aussie comedy shows start off that way.[/quote:post_uid0] You're probably right, as the saying goes the only way is up. They can only get better with more experience and so forth. However, the danger of starting off crappy is that you'll lose a potential audience that would have stayed tune if it were a more polished show. At least they're not on a commercial network where below par ratings means you get dropped pretty quickly. I know they're quite different, but I can't help but notice the similarity between this show and Backberner. To be honest, at the moment the latter one wins in my book. This is probably again because of experience and slotting in comfortably into their roles on the show. For me personally The Glasshouse is missing that spark that was evident in the ABC GNW, and I think its that element of competition that drove the show forward. It was fast paced and forced the guests to think on their feet - some of the best comedy came out of it. I'll keep watching Glasshouse, hopefully as time wears on the show will find its strengths.

And as for slagging Wil off for reading the autocue - why don't you get a talent of your own before you have a go at others. [/quote:post_uid0] In a move I will no doubt regret, I am posting in support of Cam. As a female comedian who has been referred to on this very board as 'that presenter girl' (by someone who later confessed to knowing my name)after Tripod had appeared on my radio show, I too found the posts regarding Vivian disrespectful pointlessly nasty. The first point I would like to make is that Vivian is not a comedian and was not invited onto the program to try to be one. And secondly, I started doing stand up when I was twenty years old and was determined that I would never use the fact that I happen to be a woman as an excuse for any dissapointments I might experience. I simply didn't believe it made any difference. However now, eight years later it pains me to report that I have changed my mind and have given up on ever being treated as an equal by the industry or certain comedy fans. In particular, I was dissapointed to read Sharleen's reports from Ediburgh reporting 5 star reviews for Ross Noble and Adam Hills who actually both received 3 stars in both the Scotsman and the List, and no mention of my 4 star reviews. I hoped for a little more sisterhood from and Australian woman, but alas, this is the kind of treatment I have come to expect. I accept that there are some equal opportunity fans contributing to Mosh but I must admit that I find the general tone of the board often sexist and sometimes even verging on masogonistic. The irony is that the male comedians in this country are incredibly supportive of us girls and are often far more offended by this stuff than we are. Wil's endorsement, among others, has often been the difference between my getting a gig and missing out. Given that many of comedies biggest fans are women it is very disheartening indeed to feel as though they are not as interested in our triumphs as they are in those of the boys. Don't get me wrong, I can get as swept up in the talent and confidence of a comedy boy as the next girl, but I have also found comedy girls to be as exciting, edgy and inspirational as any man. As I said, I'm sure I will regret this but why not take a moment to think about how many comedy girls have their own TV/radio shows in this country, how many comedy girls appear on the Comedy Festival Gala every year, how many comedy girls have won the the Perrier, how many comedy girls are imported by the festival every year. Compare those figures when you ask the same questions about boys and see if you can find it in your hearts to support us and therefor yourselves before you accuse me of being bitter and jealous. And thank you Cam. Meshel

I don't think women's comedy (on TV) is being helped by the fact that a lot of the time when a woman [i:post_uid0]does[/i:post_uid0] get a gig hosting/starring, it ends up being crap for one reason or another. :frown: Or you end up talking about "secret women's business" and have half the audience switch off. ;) I realise some guy comedians do the same, and not all women comedians do that, but things like that don't really help "the cause". And with seemingly so many more guys [i:post_uid0]thinking[/i:post_uid0] they're funny enough to do stand-up, that floods the scene with even more guys... In defence of the [i:post_uid0]general population[/i:post_uid0] of MOSH though, [i:post_uid0]good[/i:post_uid0] women comedians do usually get a good reception. Julie McCrossin has often been called a goddess in these parts, as has Jean Kittson, Judith Lucy and others. There doesn't seem to be much 'young' female talent coming onto television at present, which is probably part of the problem. I think women's comedy would probably get a huge lift if a really gorgeous woman got her face on telly and said things that (straight) guys found really funny. Seriously though, there does seem to be a bit of a gap there. I honestly can't remember the last 'young' female comedian I saw on television (although I don't watch a lot of it). On the male side there's people like Rove, Wil, Charlie, "The Tooheys New Guy" ( ) etc... On the female side theres... Corinne.. And.. Errrr. :frown: They probably do exist, but when it comes to comedy on TV, I'm probably a fair representation of what most people see, and that's Wil, Rove etc. Perhaps it has something to do with the general perception of women comedians being 'bitches', or who whine about things to try and get a laugh (even though that is not the only routine women do), while the male comedians are [i:post_uid0]BLOKES[/i:post_uid0].. ie; they tell fart jokes, and beer jokes, and talk about sport.. And are just generally not seen as 'nasty'. Or perhaps none of what I just said made any sense, let alone actually had any relevance. :) I replied to cam mostly because he/she was [i:post_uid0]rude[/i:post_uid0] about it. Your post by contrast was well thought out and presented a reasonable argument without attacking anyone. So my reply was likewise polite (I think! :) ). Perhaps some day soon we'll see you hosting a TV show? Then we can say 'that presenter girl [i:post_uid0]who was on TV last night[/i:post_uid0]"! :dunce:

Reputation: ![]() Reputation Power: 5 | Woah...controversy... I didn't even see this week's ep of the glasshouse(my sis forgot to tape it for me - as I was out..*sob*), and although this is gonna sound totally weak now.. I'd have to say.. as much as I'm a major fan of male comedians, I agree that it sucks women don't get treated equally when it comes to comedy, I've often thought - 'gee, I wish I could be a comedian' - but dismissed it because I thought it would be far too much of a struggle, I've personally enjoyed thouroughly the female comedians I HAVE seen; Judith Lucy, Kim Hope, Jodie J.Hill and Jo Stanley, Sarah Kendall, Terri Psiakis, Cal Wilson etc.. I think the main reason there's so many people here that are 'boy comedian' fans is because the girl comedians are so highly outnumbered by them, not because they're better than them.. I also think Meshel, that you do a great job on enough rope, and am now definately planning to see you at the comedy festival next year...I'm sorry if I've ever said anything to offend you - I don't think I have, but could be wrong. Female comedians DO deserve a go, I wish I had the guts (and also - wish I was funny enough) to get up and do what you do, and I highly respect you for that. Good on you, Leish

| MOSH Regular | So would we rather have this show or not?? I, for one, do NOT want it to go away. Sure, I haven't watched it at the actual time it's on yet, but there's a lot of shit on telly these days, and this is decent stuff (not to be taken the wrong way ). That is all... | ||

Reputation: ![]() Reputation Power: 4 | personally, i think the glasshouse is just what was lacking in tv these days. it's comedy, and it's australian. sure, it might be a bit rusty to start with, but so would everybody if they were to read an autocue for the first time! good work!

I've been in the audience for that for the past two years, and it's something that I hope that I'll one day get to perform on. I do hope that females wanting to make it in comedy don't let these things discourage them though. It's one of the things I've found hard. | MOSH Regular | hehehe, fair enough then Mythor. But yes, that was Terri Psiakis on that episode. #### would I like to interview her! I should probably get around to writing the rest of my interviews first before trying to find out how to contact her, shouldn't I? And for your information, Aussie Jokers is half an hour, rather than 3 minutes ;) (I haven't watched it yet though, but I did tape it so I will).
