i agree with coco. (after all, she is my big sister!) i like comedians that are funny. most of those may be male, but in a profession where the majority are male, it's just a matter of maths. also, i don't get the chance to go and watch comedy live, and most of what is seen on tv is male.
i do admire all of those with the guts to get up and have a go... i like to watch, but i've never been one to have a go at that sort of thing!

by the way, (referring to the actual topic) i like the glass house!

I think Mythor would make a great television executive.

Me too. Stargate and Buffy would never 'make way' for anything ever again! :scream: :)

Um - i didnt expect my post to have such a reponse....

I have lots of comments on Women and Comedy, which i won't impose on you all.(cause i know you'll just all yell cause its a commercial tv veiw.) I do stand up- all i can speculate is that the reason there arent that many females, is cause of the aussie style of comedy, the styles changing though....

i think the best thing about aussie comedy is that we have such a diverse sence of humour, we dont just have one style. If you take a look around you wont find every comedian has the same style, only simalarities.

What a fantastic response. *I really thought I was going to be caned for my comments which I guess proves the point a number of you have made regarding generalisations made about mosh.

In general i think that audiences make up their minds about performers based on performance. *A lot of people, particularly those who don't see much live comedy, seem genuinely surprised when they like a female comedian and can be very enthusiastic about it. *They are taught not to expect it, or even consider it by a mainstream media which is owned and operated by *middle aged men. *Much like our world in general.

If comedy is all about reflecting upon our society, then maybe a society which still struggles with ideas ranging from women in combat to breast feeding in public, is not ready to be reflected upon and made to feel ubsurd by women. *Perhaps that is still a bit confronting.

During my stay in Edinburgh I handed out leaflets to my show The Whore Whisperer to the Puppetry of the Penis crowd every night and was subjected to more than one disgusted 'no thank you', usually from middle aged women. *To which I would reply, 'Oh, so it's all about the cocks in your world is it babe?' *I've never been backward in coming forward when it comes to hipocracy.

This is what we are up against people. *It's as subtle as it is insidious and all we can really do as young, open minded people in a world of ignorant mediocrity, is recognise it, draw attention to it, but ultimately settle for artistic satisfaction. *There are worse fates.

I'm so glad we all rock. :coolsunn:

I'm with Kez. It's the math coming through!!! It's a profession where the majority are male. I just don't know that many female comics as I do female. If I had to pick comedians I really really liked, there'd be about 80% male and 20% female, simply because I don't know as many females as males. Okay, I'll shut up now. I don't really feel like posting this now, but I've typed it up already and if I don't post it then it was a waste of time typing... :meh:

*goes to look through the old Comfest program and do the maths for that in the male/female, known/unknown thingy*

Well well well....

Firstly have to say that I agree wholeheatedly with Meshel's point. *We have to come to terms with the fact that the mainstream media is dominated by men so women are necessarily and inevitably subordinated. *But don't forget the media establishment is run by white, middle-class, Anglo-Saxon, protestant, heterosexual men so consequently homosexual, bisexual, indigenous, non-white, working class, non-protestant, etc people get shafted too. *It's the nature of capitalism and the first step to changing it is to recognise it. *We can't just accept that men get better publicity than women in comedy and the resulting state of mind that it's natural for us to think men are better comedians or more suited to this or that. *The point is to try and push the boundaries, overturn stereotypes and change stuff.

Anyway, enough of my rambling.

In addition, Meshel was just talking about this on Enough Rope... about this board. *Mythor, you were mentioned as our extra special sexist moderator and I think you were quoted slightly out of context. *Regardless, we've got some publicity... bad as it may have been. *I tuned in in the middle but they were talking about it for at least a good 5-8 minutes. *Anyway, if you're in Melbounre tune in, cos it's not a bad show... play some funny stuff sometimes... though more Mel Brooks would be good! :)

That's sexist too.
Not all men want that to be the case...
