Getting in early with this little article from the Herald Sun (I think) 09/08/2004

Short-listed

McDERMOTT FILM
Funnyman Paul McDermott is up for an AFI award with his directorial debut, The Scree.
The former Doug Anthony All Star was today nominated for best director of a short fiction film, which he also wrote.
He described the flick as a "gothic horror children's fable''. It is dedicated to the late actor Ruth Cracknell, who read McDermott's poem on which the film is based.
The AFI Awards are at the Regent Theatre on October 29.

It's a very good film, in particular the sound of it. The voices especially, I love the way the voices were kind of layered.

Yeah I agree, the sound was cool.

I actually really liked it even if I know those who didn't.

I thought it was very well done. I didn't know what I would think of it and was a bit suspicious when I went to see it but yeah, I was really impressed. Sounds were great and colours and such as well.

Congrats to him for the nomination. Should be interesting to see how he goes.

In my extremely biased opinion, the film was fantastic.

Granted, I have seen no other short films to compare it to, I think it should do well.

It’s peculiar, so I’m not surprised that some people wouldn’t like it.

I thought it was very tacky, but that's what I loved about it. Very child-like.

And the competition is:

AFI Award for Best Short Fiction Film
Awarded to the Director

Floodhouse - Miro Bilbrough
Lennie Cahill Shoots Through - Paul Oliver
So Close To Home - Jessica Hobbs
The Scree - Paul McDermott

Anyone can become an AFI member and vote on the non-feature categories, and get a chance to see them too.

The AFI screenings are going swimmingly... three out the four short fiction films turned up blank so they couldn't be shown!!

Don't you think they would have thought to check the film when it arrived? Stoopid :frustrat:

Does that mean the remaining one wins by default (I love that word) or does it mean the competition will take longer?

I think they have got them scheduled to be screened again in a couple of weeks, so hopefully they will actually have copies to show this time! If not, the one shown will not win by default because voting will still take place, but if nobody has seen the films then it will all be guess work… not really very fair. I hope they get their act together…
