Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is at Her Majesty's Theatre from January 14 to 22. The MS Society will take advance bookings from Monday, phone 8360 0813. Tickets on sale at BASS from December 11. Dream role for Katie By PATRICK McDONALD 26nov04 The Advertiser THERE is life after Popstars and Australian Idol – and Katie Underwood is the proof. The former Adelaide singer, who won the first Australian series of Popstars as part of the all-girl group Bardot, will return home in January to star in the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. "I've been trying to get into musical theatre for the past couple of years," Underwood says. She was cast in a national tour of Hair three years ago but the production was cancelled for financial reasons. "I'm really gearing myself up now as an all-round entertainer, rather than just a pop star," Underwood says. Winning a TV reality show was no guarantee of a long-term career. "I guess that's what can be so difficult about having such an accelerated start," she says. "The reality is very different – that it actually gets more and more difficult to sustain a career as you go along. "Every year, there is new talent coming through, whether it's from Idol, whether it's overseas competition or whether it's just the next big thing." Underwood will star as the Narrator in the Multiple Sclerosis Society's production of Joseph, alongside former Doug Anthony All Stars and Don't Forget Your Toothbrush performer Tim Ferguson in the dual roles of Potiphar and Pharaoh. Rising Australian stage star Thern Reynolds, who has just starred in Fosse on London's West End, will play Joseph. It is the second time the MS Society has brought in professional stars for its fundraising musicals, following the success of Normie Rowe in Les Miserables in October. Underwood has shelved plans for a solo album to collaborate with dance music acts, after scoring the hit song Beautiful with Disco Montego. Between musical engagements, she also helps her husband, a cosmetic physician, to run two clinics in Melbourne. "It feels a lot more real to have a 'normal' job. I think it keeps me a bit more grounded," she says. | ||
