I did say "a relatively modest cost". I have no idea what ridiculous price people charge for such a thing, I just used a figure I estimated would be at the bargain basement end and did the math based on a decent sized collection.
$1200 is a lot of money for most people. $4800 is, too. People here spend that much on stupider things though so who knows. Maybe you think $1200 is quite reasonable.

Given that it would be illegal to do it, you can't expect to pay the standard price anyway.

I never actually considered the professional option.

I have a dvd recorder with an 80 hour hard drive connected to my tv, which cost me something like $500. I also have over 100 videos of comedy stuff. I keep meaning to transfer it all across onto dvd, if only because the discs would take up MUCH less space than the videos currently do, but money has never been the thing that held me back.

My problems are finding the time to do it all (although I guess it'd be pretty simple to get each recording started, then I could wander off and do other stuff *G*), the fact that my videos are mostly not directly recorded from tv, they're copies of things from other people, so the quality isn't great, and that they're incredibly disorganised mixes of bits and pieces from everywhere (I have a bunch that are hand-me-downs from someone dumping their collection, and I haven't got a clue what's on half of them), and if I'm going to go to the effort to convert them to dvd format, I'd want to do it with some degree of order.

Oh, and the fact that the discs don't hold all that much in video format. 1 hour per disc high quality, 2 hours if you're prepared to put up with a vaguely pixelated look to the video quality. Not that it'd make a lot of difference to some of the recordings I have *G* Some of them are like trying to watch a performance through driving snow *G*

My copies of DAAS Kap aren't bad...comedy channel editions, for the most part, with only a little static and sound flaws at the starts and finishes of episodes, but some of them are missing bits at the start and finish too. I've actually ended up with multiple copies of some episodes, so I might actually have all the footage required to make up a full set of unblemished episodes, but that'd require more video manipulation ability than I currently have *G*

While it would be nice if professional quality copies of the old Dougs stuff was made available now, even if someone with the rights to it wanted to put it out, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the original footage has been lost, and dodgy recordings are all that are left.

plus most companies will not allow you to duplicate any material you don't own the rights too.

I still have my DAAS Kap copies but they are not brilliant quality... was mainly hoping for something a little better (the sound isn't great on half the eps due to crap VCR at time of recording).

I can put them on DVD though... My mother set up a computer that is connected to a VCR, not too much hassle to set it up and let it run.

Big Gig stuff etc is a different story.

Shame comedy channel is not playing it anymore (not that I have comedy channel but my mother does, and a DVD recorder to go with it). I plan to eventually put my LATNT and D&A onto DVD (I have an unopened original of D&A waiting for that reason)... Just for storage and hopefully longer life. Also Edinburgh years and DAAS LOVE and all that...

Really wish the boys would come out and release it all on DVD though...

There are so many pre-GNW things like DAAS kapital that I have heard all about, but just haven't seen! Though I have seen some youtube stuff. I definitely would buy kapital if it came out on DVD... but I'm sure its too obscure for most. Though I did ask some random people at work today, and I was suprised that a few did know it.

I know how you feel. I'd heard lots about the Doug Anthony Allstars but had no idea what they were like. Then I saw the For Holly Concert and just by chance bought the Dead and Alive CD and listened to it- I liked it so I purchased the vid and the rest came from there. It's kinda strange though for me having known about Paul since 1998. (I was young- pre teens ( I was a few years off teenager hood)and Paul was the first gorgeous guy I'd seen period.) So you know it's weird seeing it all now after it's happened.

I have a copy of DAAS Kapital now and it took me four episodes to work out what it was about but it works. It's not too obscure if you get the storyline first then the rest is easier. At least that's how it worked for me.

I like to think of Paul as one of the people who has taught me the most. He's introduced me to new people, new concepts and lots of comedy. I know you might have heard this before or think it's odd or whatever but the truth is I couldn't thank him enough for it.

Amities,

I know Paul and co. have really changed the way I see the world. He was a fantastic role model for me, confidence wise. I'm trying to write something really serious about here but can't concentrate because my flatmate is practising one of his songs. Argh.
