The Girl Who Swallowed Bees

With news that the Girl Who Swallowed Bees is starring at the Berlin International Film Festival, does anyone know when we get to see it? I was hoping it would have been shown at Flickerfest, but it wasn't. I loved The Scree so much, and I love the book, so I'm hanging to see this too.

it took ages for the scree to get to Melbourne, hopefully it won't take as long for this to come here.

I hope they show it on SBS like they did The Scree on Eat Carpet. It'd be nice to see it.

Speaking of the Scree, is the film available? I would like to see it.

Doesn't BigPond movies offer a Flickerfest dvd that features The Scree? You can only rent from them, but it'd be better than nothing if you really want to see it.

I've been waiting for The Scree to come back on the SBS show SOS (Shorts on Screen). They showed it on it last year in about March, but I forgot to set my timer to tape it, and I've been waiting for it to come back since - here's hoping. SOS is on Saturday night at about 11.30pm if you want to keep an eye out for it.

Girl Who Swallowed Bees
Article about Paul McDermott's short film

Sally Browne

February 25, 2008 11:00pm

PIA Miranda was destined to play the starring role in Paul McDermott's short film, The Girl Who Swallowed Bees.

The animated tale, about a bitter young girl determined to end her life by swallowing a hive of bees, originally appeared as a long-form poem in a book, which McDermott illustrated and self-published.
Not knowing her history, McDermott invited Miranda – best known for her role in Looking for Alibrandi – to audition for the title role.

"We were looking at a number of other actresses and we had an audition day, but when Pia came in she said how lovely it was to see us all again but she had to have this role because it was her.

"She said her partner actually bought her the book, which is very rare.

"Then she said it was because she was allergic to bees and she actually thought that if she was ever going to do away with herself then she would get a bee sting.

"So it was a very romantic notion that she would do the role. Everything from the start has been quite lovely, the whole process of making it."

The darkly charming piece, which also features narration by Hugo Weaving and won an AFI award last year, will be screened on opening night at this year's Flickerfest short film festival.

The touring festival will be held at Dendy's George St Cinema in Brisbane from Friday to Sunday. It features three evening programs of international short films, plus a Sunday afternoon program highlighting 30 years of Australian animation. The session will feature the 1976 Academy Award winning film Leisure.

The three-day line-up also includes Car Pool, a new Queensland work starring Kerry Armstrong, Italian film Il Supplente (The Substitute), which has been nominated for an Academy Award this year, and Spider by Nash Edgerton, which won the Audience Award at last year's Sydney Film Festival.

While juggling a new series of Good News Week, McDermott hopes to work on a third short film in his series called Crab Boy and the Girl in the Shell. The first was The Scree, starring Flacco (aka Paul Livingston) and narrated by Ruth Cracknell.

Flickerfest 17th International Short Film Festival, Dendy Cinemas, George Street, Brisbane, ph 3211 3244 for bookings.

Enjoy!

Amities,

SS
