I remember that the topic was raised in *thinks* 2000. A few of us wound up staying together, but it was a bit chaotically planned. I think I tried again in 2001, but nothing came of it, and I wound up in an apartment by myself for most of the month *g*. Last comfest I had four people staying with me at various stages, which helped immensely in the costs. This coming comfest I'm sort of expecting to have at least five people staying at various times.

The thing is, I know all the people I've invited to stay with me this time. I've met them all and I know I'm not going to have trouble sharing close quarters with them. Apartment sharing can be odd if you don't know who you're with.

If you want to be cheap, there's always the backpacker's hostels...someone did suggest getting a dorm in one for MOSHers only one year, but I don't think that ever happened.

As far as I know, the apartment sharing thing I do is the cheapest way to do comfest, but there's only about four apartments in the whole city that can be rented for less than $150 a night, and I've stayed in two of them *giggles* One is now more expensive (but I'm staying there anyway *G*) and the other is, well, I wasn't thrilled with my stay there...(slowest lift in the world, no water pressure in the shower, tv kept turning itself off, the smoke alarm kept turning itself on, CD player didn't work, the chairs had been broken and glued back together so when someone leaned back on one they were nearly killed, and it had a terrible spiral staircase that wasn't fun to climb when drunk *g* SoS will back me up on all of this *g* although she did find me trying to climb the stairs and winding up crawling very funny *glares*).

I think it might be a bit late to plan something like that now...the other problem is timing...I don't think many people who come from interstate or a fair way out of Melbourne stay for the entire month, and if you want to share a place for a week, you have to make sure everyone can go for the same week.

I've tried planning this sort of thing a few times now, trust me, it isn't easy even when you're planning for friends *g* I'm half dreading the comfest guide coming out in March, I'll have to make another spreadsheet to work out what we're seeing when!

For a decent and not overly expensive hotel that's close to stuff, try the Victoria Hotel in Little Collins Street. Or there's the City Square Motel, on Swanston...I've stayed in both *larfs*

Cheapest option, of course, is to find a kind relative or friend and crash with them, but it's not an option for everyone *g*

Good luck with the planning *g*

yeah, I'm with Alisso on this one... apartments are the cheapest way to go for long periods. I've stayed at the same two as her (Queen St and Flinders St), and the Queen st one is by far the best. It's more expensive, but its a bargain when you get 4 people or more to share the costs. The location and facilities are wonderful as well too.

And as for 2003, well Alisso is obviously staying at Queen St (hmmm... the Madison/Honey Apartments right?) and I'm back at death trap Flinders St (otherwise known as the 'Cosmopolitan') for a whole month. Oh boy I'm looking forward to the fire alarm going off everytime I cook a piece of toast! But I've been assured its all been fixed and that I have the bigger apartment this time. I'm pretty much by myself, but I have visitors coming to stay here and there throughout April.

But really, if you are going for a week or less, you can't get better than the Victoria Hotel. A lot of Moshers stayed there over weekends in 2002 in a standard double/twin room for only $80p.n. It has a ensuite, tv, radio, tea and coffee facilties and a fridge. oh yeah, and a bed
:p

The real bonus lies in it being next door to the Town Hall as well as being a venue for the comfest by itself.

Heehee... I've stayed in the same apartments that these two have stayed in... *grins* but I don't remember much...

Oh, Sharleen, are you coming back next year? I owe you a dinner of some sort... maybe roast chicken *grins* but will you be around to offer me an oven? Otherwise I'll just mail you a chicken sandwich... :lookarou:

Gee, all the effort that goes into finding accomodation...I'm sure glad that I live in Melbourne :p

I may be able to offer my couch, but I am unsure as to where I'll be living then (going flat hunting in Jan/Feb yay!). My preference is Southbank/St Kilda Road which isnt too far away from the action.

Anyway if I am able to, I will let interested parties know closer to the Fest.

We took the smoke alarm off the roof after it woke us up at 7am after a big night out in the hifi *giggles* And I'm not sure if I'd believe the assurances...they told us someone was going to come and fix the tv in the first week we were there, and the next time we spoke to the owners they said that the tv guy said he'd been, nothing had been wrong with the tv, and he'd left. Where he actually went, we have no idea *g* but we had the tv turning itself off randomly all month *rolls eyes*

And be careful in the chairs *G* Don't lean back *giggles*

Vax - yeah, I'll be in Melbourne next year for the whole comfest, so plenty of time for me to collect that Roast Chicken dinner off you. Depending of course on the oven working. Love comfest time, if not for the actual comedy but the fact I always lose weight. yay!

Alisso - I'm planning on removing the fire alarm first thing when I arrive. Either that or just bagging it up so no so-called 'smoke' gets in to set it off. I'm never one to sit on seats, so they dont bother me too much. I prefer couches and beds and the whole laying down thing. I'm just a lazy bugger. I'm bringing my CD player/radio/alarm clock down anyway so thats no bother, but no TV.... arghhh! what will I do? A whole month! I only lasted 3 weeks without TV in the UK before going out and buying a second hand one. heh

My parents have said that they'll let us go, and that they'll drive down and have their own little holiday while we have our fun, and all we have to pay for is our part of the accomodation and tickets and stuff. Oh, and I have to go to church on Easter Sunday, but still, I'm allowed to go to the comedy festival!!

Excellent, I'm excited for you!

Sure is my favorite time of the year (including birthday and Xmas), but also the most stressful - oh the planning, scheduling of shows with friends - the running between shows cos you have booked them waaaay to close together and one has run overtime!! (memories of booking Comedyoscopy & Wil Anderson on the same night!) and dealing with the other half (no babe I do not have time for you for...ah one whole month!)

But each year I do seem to get slightly better at it!

Yeah I'm about to start my fund for the comedy festival, so Im not completely broke during it. I'm hoping $50 a week between now and then should be enough to keep me going.

I am pleased to see that other people do use excel spreadsheets or the like to plan their time at Comfest.

My friends do think me rather strange for doing that (the word anal does pop up now and then), but frankly I dont know how I would co-ordinate it otherwise, 23+ shows in 3 weeks, not including improv, repeats, spur of the moment shows or the festival club. It will only be worse this year as my baby sis wants to bring a few of her mates along.

I'm one of those people who get the com fest guide on the friday before the long weekend and pour over it with a pen to mark all the shows I want to see, in two categories those that are essential and those that aren't so important and then you plan what show combinations you can see in an evening, work out who you're going to certain shows with, and then on the first morning tickets are available I rock up late for work cause I'm buying tickets

This is a serious business, not something to be taken lightly or as a joke. We can't live without our comedy festival and it should be treated accordingly

When you're trying to co-ordinate the must-see show lists of three people, and you have one person only staying a week and they have a longer list than the other two put together, a spreadsheet to eliminate overlaps and a table to record your timetable are both essential!

It's not anal at all, it's just good planning!

Oh, and I discovered last year, ten minutes is not long enough to get from the Pony Club to the Town Hall, if the Godboys run over and Mr Anderson actually decides to start on time for the first time in EVER!!!

i sooooooo wish i was going this year. but we got our holidays for easter the other day, comfest finishes on the 19th, i start holidays on the 20th. but if they change, first thing i'm gonna do is fly to melbourne.

i would seriously recommend the victoria hotel. it rocks. i got a single room for 30 a night, with tv and sink and fridge. the bathroom is just down the hall and is very clean and you need your key to get in and out so no chance of nude runs (unless you want), plus some of the gigs (a la mcdermott) were on downstairs, it backs on to the townhall and the beer at the bar was $1.80 a glass!!!!!

though i would suggest (looks pointedly at alisso and SOS after their incident) if your going to share with someone you don't know, i strongly suggest a criminal background check, psychological testing and for the love of god don't pick a librarian. i still wake at night screaming covered in sweat, and i wasn't even staying with her!!!!!.

although i must admit when i came home i did actually think that i had hallucinated this person (surely no one could be that insane, plus i was drinking ALL week) until i watched the GH and she was on and i screamed "OH MY GOD THE PAUL MCDERMOTT LADY IS REAL!!!!!" and now she's stalking me too

can u tell i've been drinking today???
