With various comedians touring before MICF and some people here having been to Edinburgh and just in general, who's not to be missed and who should be avoided?

I think a lot of the acts have been here before so people should be familiar with them.

However, Stephen K Amos is usually a barrel of laughs (I know he's doing Adelaide Fringe), Dave Johns is another mental geordie (he's part of the 12 Angry Men ensemble and should be doing some comedy gigs), and Howard Read is one for the geeks and cartoon lovers amongst us (MICF).

I don't know of any act that should be avoided. Comedy is subjective, so each to their own. I say we should all go out this year and promise to take at least one risk on a show... preferably a local.

As I understand, Ross is doing Adelaide and Melbourne and probably dates elsewhere in the country.

*ahem* I know for a fact, he's in Australia already

And his new show for Edinburgh this year is called 'Noodlemeister'.

The acts may have been to Melbourne before but we all haven't, there are still some Comfest virgins among us.

familiarity or not, I think its very subjective.
My only real recommendation is to pick up a guide and go see shows that sound good to you.

I'd give my own picks, but what I think rocks is another mans shit.

for example - I think Adam Bloom is a good comic, but so many people I know disagree. And no, Bloom isnt coming.

If you want to get some ideas of what to expect, maybe check out The Scotsman reviews for Edinburgh last year... www.thescotsman.co.uk

It's word of mouth.

Those who want to know what others think will read it and those who don't won't. Personally I'd be more inclined to go see something if someone I knew said they'd enjoyed it then if a reviewer did.

fair enough.

Ummm... see my mentions as above. If anyone gets to Adelaide Fringe, go see 12 Angry Men. I've heard nothing but raves for it.

just to explain my attitude - I've got shows of my own at Melbourne this year to manage, and I dont want it to come off like one big advertisement, nor a slag off of any competition.

However, seeing as I'm here - come see all the shows at the Portland hotel - we have Nicko and Joe from the UK, our dearest Gutter monkey (aka Scott Pollard), Clint Paddison and Joel Ozborn from Sydney, and then a Late Show featuring 2 special hosts and a whole heap guests both local and international. Every single show is a winner.

heh

Blatant advertising and no subjectivity whatsoever.

Well I've no shows to manage or promote but I've liked what I've seen of Joel Ozborn.
