That which should have been a show case of up and coming acts, new material and a sample of the 100+ shows appearing this year was a rehash of last years event in a tacky tacky bad side show theme. This event has become very much a case of token and access displaying their performers (5 acts from token and 4 from access). Funnily enough most of which appeared last year at the gala as well. IE: here is the list... and how many did we see last year: Adam Hills, Chris Addison (UK), Danny Bhoy, Daniel Kitson, Dave Hughes, Denise Scott, Fiona O'Loughlin, GUD - Paul McDermott, Mick Moriarty & Cameron Bruce, Howard Read (UK), Lano & Woodley, Lee Mack (UK), Maria Bamford (USA) Rob Rouse (UK ), Todd Barry (USA ), Tom Gleeson, Tripod, Wil Anderson. - and yes, MORE (Yes even some of the 'more' were trotted out again from last year. And it's funny that we then bitch and moan that they all repeat their material.... well maybe these bigger selling shows should stop burning all their material, stand down for a bit and be rest assured in their ability to sell their venues allowing some of the smaller names the space on the small screen to start building an audience base... At least then the gala maybe amusing and fresh and worth going to as a sample of the festival... and no GUD did not do Jeans they did Rene and Stranger Danger, not their best material[/b]

| MOSH Elite | ok so who was funny & who wasn't. that's what i want to know. and i totally agree that access & token seem to be taking over. but even if they show some of their other acts apart from the big guns. i would really like to see people like MBG, Jussy and others get a chance. a lot of the reason the ones that appeared are big is because most of us saw them for the first time on the gala. how can we see new acts and the next big things if they won't give them a chance? I'd never heard of Danny Bhoy, Daniel Kitson & Lee Mack until they were on the gala. I decided Wil Anderson wasn't an arsehole when i saw him on the gala (ok i was wrong about that). seeing Adam Hills do working class anthem inspired a lot of us to see his show and fall in love with his work. | ||

Reputation: ![]() Reputation Power: 5 | I dunno about that, I think people would still watch it - i mean sure, have *some* big names, but bring out the newbies.. i can't believe we haven't seen Anthony Menchetti on a gala yet... and they so need Justin Hamilton, MBG, etc. like you guys said - these guys are probably as good or better than a lot of the 'big names' and all it would take to get bigger numbers to their shows would be some tv stardom. damn it.. that's just sad.. the prob with the gala is that most comics do their 'tv-friendly' material, and for a lot of them, they fall back on that safe stuff that they know is gonna get a laugh... even if they've done it before. *sigh* damn it. i want shiney new comics on telly. let us protest!

Reputation: ![]() Reputation Power: 4 | I thought it was pretty good considering I had heard quite a bit of the material before. Glad to hear new songs from Tripod and Gud. And also glad that Danny Bhoy did a different bit of material than what he had done on Rove and Stand Up last week. The act that had me in tears from laughing so much was the Big Howard Little Howard, that was so funny.

LMAO! :p His new do looks better up close although it does remind me of the new Hairy Tim look we saw on Ferguson at the AFI's. I think from memory the bits they bleeped were to do with Pauline Hanson being in jail.

| MOSH Elite | that's the best i've seen tripod in years!!! back to the good old open slather days, none of the shit that was tripod are tripod last year. overall i was quite bored with the show, have to watch it a couple of more times to make an informed decision. though i found the opening quite cringeworthy. wil: heard most of the material before, wasn't funny the 2nd time round. man needs to learn not to shout everything he says. that's why microphones were invented. adam hills: cacked myself. I think only adam could have gotten away with doing the gay priest thing. though my dad came in 1/2way through and thought adam was gay! daniel kitson: rather amusing, laughed out loud a couple of times. though he tended to lose me slightly through it. interesting thing i noticed was that they cut to sharleen during his bit. no reaction from her. hehe maria bamford: poster child for why american comedians don't work well here (apart from arj & rich hall). i speak fluent american and i could barely understand her. danny bhoy: funny. nuff said. it's always the people with accents who do accents really well. dave hughes: was ok, i don't find him funny anymore but it was a good performance. had balls going for the rape joke. pulled it off quite well. howard read: interesting concept. the song idea got tired quickly but the overall effect was quite good. it was kind of Blue's Clues for adults. fiona O'loghlin: my mum liked her denise scott: love scotty, found it funny on a personal level cause everything she said is happening right now to my mum (cept mum tells people she's got a terminal disease) sarah kendall: very good delivery. i find that a lot of her stuff doesn't get big laughs but people love her stuff. it's laughing on the inside gud: bah! was expecting a lot didn't really get it. could barely make out what they were saying most of the time. worst part my mum thought it was funny (now she has been anti-mcdermott from the very beginning, like banning us from watching daas kap & the big gig). now she likes him. something is very wrong. schneedles: mime is evil. mimes who talk are even worse todd barry: not bad, got a couple of laughs out of me which is hard (I'm very much "make me laugh funny man") could be worth seeing. though i don't take kindly to people bagging Kyan from Queer Eye Fleety: very unfleety like performance (though i tend to compare everything he does to the spartacus joke). though i did laugh quite a lot. rob rouse: piece went to fast to really judge. only laughed during the chicks on motorbikes joke. lee mack: want to marry him and have his children. i found the whole night amusing but few on laughs. But i fell off the lounge from cacking myself. LEAVE HIM ALONE HE'S ONLY A CHICKEN!!! | ||

Reputation: ![]() Reputation Power: 7 | I hate Kath & Kim so I kind of tuned out from the start, the only thing that really grabbed my attention was the bleeps during GUD. I did notice that they seems really short segments this year, were they or did Ted hack into them in editing? I did tape it for the feral so I might watch it again later.
