Towards 2006

I went to the special participants performance of "Keating!" on the last Saturday of the festival. It was a veritable who's-who of comedy there and at the end of the show they gave them a standing ovation.

Standing in the hall afterwards I overheard a top-shelf comedian remark "Well, let's all go home and reconsider this comedy business." Hopefully that will actually happen. "Keating!" was comedy as I'd like to see it done - smart, political, damned talented, satirical, well-researched, with something to say, damn fun ... it also didn't pander to the audience (or the mythical "general population") but chose it's own level and stayed there.

I predict that the fact that the show kicked ass (as well as the fact that it took out all the major awards) will be reflected next year, and people will try to put on shows that are somewhat influenced by 'Keating!'. This could mean two things:
A) Smart, satirical, clever shows.
B) Musicals.

Gee, I wonder what will happen.

(Get ready for "Ghostbusters; the musical")

There were some shows this year that were most definitely all of those things, but I agree that (hopefully) comedy will move further in that direction.

Or C) Shows jumping on the "political comedy" bandwagon that are dumb, about politics/politicians but not political, scarcely talented, obvious, poorly-researched, with nothing to say that hasn't been said in funnier ways a dozen times before, damn ordeals ... that will also pander to the audience for cheap laughs.

Channel Ten is insulting our intelligence twice.
Firstly there is no such word as 'bigness'. And is sounds stupid in your ads. Stop using it.
Secondly, Rove... well the above applies...

i saw him at the comedy store with adam hills a couple of years ago. he died in the arse. in a room full of drunken aussies the night before anzac day, doing solely ethnic material and talking in, as one guy said "funny wog language" didn't really work.

the audience couldn't relate to him and at times couldn't understand what he was saying (i could cause i speak italian and i understand a bit of greek). it was all largely wogs out of work stereotypes like "how funny is it that italian mothers always make you eat" then impersonating italian and greek mothers etc.

I went to see Simon Palomares (free tix). Not too bad, but not the best I saw either.

Back on topic, roll on 2006, and does anyone know if there's a prohibition on state finalists entering Raw again?

I'm sure if their policy is anything like their definition of a "New Comedian", you shouldn't have any problem trying again.

It doesn't say anything about those who win though. Would they have a different polic, do you think?

And every Tassie heat is a final. Tim, you bad person, I know that was at least your third go.

So how did the National winner manage to get in? Did he apply in two states? That's dedication.

edit: If you click on the separate state links you can see the lineups. Yay, I get mentioned somewhere on an official comedy site!

Don't get the rage at me Renee, it's all a bit dodgy if you go by the letter, Ben Payne won in 99 and he's competed several times since, I'm sure you're fine to go in next years heat

Random 2006 note - I was asked (just before my 3rd ever performance) if I intended to have show in the Festival next year. I think my answer was "Wuhhh?.........meep." Colour me shocked. I won't be able to afford to go to shows next year, let alone perform one. Plus there's the whole 'lack of material' thing.

So who is doing a show? Will we see SHRH 3? Josh Earl is not-quite-so-broke-as-he-was-this-time-last-year? The Bedroom Philosopher in Some Humourously Titled Bedroom Reference?
