Yes the Hifi has most certainly gone to shit this year, it's almost as if they don't want to make money anymore so they are scareing the die-hard fans off, even most of the comedians have given up on the place.

I won tix to a gig at the HiFi. They turned me away at the door. They said that I wasn't on the list. I did a quick look around, and I realized that I wasn't dressed in all-black, as everyone else was. So maybe my image wasn't up to their standards.

The winners were announced in the Town hall at around 12.30, and then repeated at the Hi-Fi later on.

From memory (which is impacted by the free alcohol at the ceremony thing), the winners are:

The Funny Tonne: Erin Davidson, on 120 shows.

Piece of Wood: Damian Callinan AND Fiona O'Loughlin (tie)

Golden Gibbo: Cliffy is Relaxed and Comfortable
Highly Commended: Mon's Comedy Cooker

The Age Critic's Choice: Judith Lucy
Highly Commended: Men of Steel

The Directors Award thingy: Men of Steel AND Nick Sun (tie)

Best Newcomer: Sammy J

The Barry: Demetri Martin

Hoping that the ceremony can be manouvered back to a proper large-scale celebration next year, just for the fun of it. It was pretty anticlimactic - especially when Demitri won and he wasn't there (still finishing up his own show). I mean, sure, it's the Barries and nobody should take 'em too seriously, but still... maybe an awards show in the big room at the Town Hall next year? I'd go for that.

I've always enjoyed having the awards announced pretty informally in a public place - kind of gave the punters ownership of the awards, ownership of our festival.

Saturday nights durning the festival used to be my favourite nights of the year - see a show - go to festival club - dance all night to the superband - laugh with and at comedians pretending to be rockstars - great fun. Sorry that's all over - and thank goodness for the guys up at Trades Hall - they've put on the best night's of the fest. Thanks guys.
