I'm curious and more than a little bored, listening to some of my mp3's and i was wondering, like what instrument (piano, guitar, bass, drums, tambourine whatever lol) draws you to a particular band and their music. A friend and i have had his discussion many a time and we've discovered that most of my favourite songs/bands have a really strong piano feel to them. The Whitlams, Ben Folds, both feature piano quite heavily and i love them!
Even just songs that feature piano, like 'Tiny Dancer' by *cringes*... Elton... the piano is fantastic i think.
Wondering if anyone here is the same, as in likes a particular song or band because of the drumming or the bass or yeah.
Anyhow, i'll go back and hide now.

I want my life to be like a Whitlams song...

I think it's fair to say that John Butler Trio have a predominately (can't spell) guitarish feel, as do most comedy-musicians, so yeah, I like music for the guitar

I'm obsessed with The Superjesus. I totally love Sarah McLeod and I love Garbage. And any good rock bands. Preferably aussie. (Yes I know that Garbage is from Scotland or somewhere far away like that)

I was about to say extremely technical melodies in any form, but then I remembered that a lot of hardcore/metalcore bands I see are more about energy than discernible tunes. I have a pretty wide range of tastes when it comes to music, so I don't think I can pinpoint any particular thing that draws me to certain bands. I do like certain songs for certain reasons though... no examples come to mind at the moment, but there are songs which I adore which (for example) may not have the most sophisticated lyrics but there's something about the tune or emotion in the song that drives me crazy (in a good way). Then again there are some songs where the lyrics are intriguingly beautiful but everything else about it may shit me.

My tastes in Music are so varied that I really couldn't say. I play around 20 instruments, but only really like piano and guitar. The range of what I listen goes from Nine Inch Nails and Marlyn Manson, to Queen and Eddi Reader, and incorporates quite a lot in between. And yet I'm fussy about what I listen to. Regardless of type of music, instruments used, if a song rhymes "love" with "above" then I have serious problems with the song, and most likely the band. I think that a good lyrical backbone is the foundation of any good song, but then I listen to radiohead, so I'm probably just confused.    ???

It depends on my mood really. I know that George and Marylin Manson don't even sound remotely similar but I like both of them.

I might also add that I like regurgitator, spiderbait, john butler trio, on inc, paulmac and a whole bunch of other stuff too. Oh yeah and the whitlams. damn, how could I forget them? Ok, I've really lost it now, I'll go back to my hole.

I find piano features in most of the albums I own. It is my favourite but I like guitar as well, and sometimes when they use different instruments..

I like so many types of music so I couldn't say what exactly gets me in, but I think for the most part it would be lyrics that really make your spine tingle. Like 'Make the world safe for you' by The Whitlams or 'Sugar' by You Am I, but especially 'Without you I'm nothing' by Placebo. But regarding the music, I think I'm into really dynamic stuff like 'Never tear us apart' by INXS. Can anybody seriously not love the bit where the piano is building up and then suddenly the sax solo starts. But I think most of it is up to the performers because I don't get shivers down my spine when I play that song on guitar or piano.

I guess all of what I've written is pretty stupid. I like the lyrics, the music, the performers and the way it's played. Duh. Oh, well. Somebody asked.

I like the Whitlams and Ben Folds, but then I like various ska, reggae, rockabilly, and punk stuff (Reel Big Fish, Living End etc), and then I like Metallica, and the Brown Hornet, and kind of pluto of course, and then I like comedy music (primarily guitar based).  And I like stuff like the Lucksmiths, and Gorillaz, Cake, Regurgitator, Sonic Animation (I'm very particular about dance music though).  I guess it helps that I can play the guitar.  I seem to have a wide range of music that I like.  I don't know too many bands really (lucky - don't have to spend too much on CD's),
but the ones I do are often quite different from each other.  I love harmony though - always have.  Two/three/four - I don't care.  I still think Human Nature are okay because they're talented (i like their old stuff better than their new stuff...same with No Doubt).  I like a lot of stuff.  Oh, and I tend to like a lot of bands that put a lot of humour into their songs (if you hadn't noticed already).  Good lyrics are important, but then sometimes a catchy tune can make up for bad lyrics  Okay, I'll shut up now... *hides*

well, i got a wide taste aswell, (partly coz i live in a family of musos.. who run a music schoo, and ive almost got a performance degree on cello... ) so that leaves me with alot of classical... which i love elgar (good ol cheese) and stuff like mathew hindson, and i LOVE john williams!
but my main love in music is jazz, nothing tastless like sinatra, but real jazz. like any early big bands, or even coltrain or brubeck quartet. i think its party the whole bass feel in it (and play bass aswell in several groups.. inc a jazz band.. which is SO much fun)...

yeah. anyway.. ill shut up.. coz i could go on for hours!

Hmm...I gotta say I am partial to a bit of Brit-Pop - just a bit though...too much is try hardy.

Its weird because I'm constantly finding myself remeniscing about the early 90s. It was the time when hip-hop used to be known as house music and hammer pants were cool.

But I digress. I have to say one common thing about the music I love is that its either got a good groove to it, or its so moving that it carries you...you know when it feels like the music encapsulates you and picks you up and you ride on a wave. I've got nothing against mainstream pop as long as its not too sappy or annoying. Quite frankly some of the stuff they play on JJJ is pretentious, but some of it is listenable. Ahh thank God for Salt'n'Pepa...p-push it real good
