I suggested to my musician friend that she audition, because you could perform original compositions, and she didn't speak to me for the rest of the day.

Does anyone remember Hey Hey It's Saturday and they had Red Faces and the panel with Red Simons? Well that is what Australian Idol reminds me of, a slick overproduced Red Faces without half of the wit that Red Simons displayed. At least when Red Simons said something nasty, you were expecting it and at the same time it was humorous.

I haven't seen the American or English version but somehow I think something has been lost in the "translation". I know the formula for this franchised calls for a bad guy etc. but I think it lacks subtlty and finesse and comes off as crude. Regardless of what sort of industry the entertainment industry is bitchy, tough or otherwise I think people should have been given full warning about the type of treatment they would receive. When they decided to leave humanity at the door the contestants have, in my opinion, every right to form a class action against that classless piece of what tries to pass for entertainment. Sure some people performed badly and were cringeworthy but good on those people who just gave it a go and dressed up in ridiculous costumes because this show deserves to be mocked.

I do enjoy seeing Marcia and think she has enormous talen but I think in parts she has sunk to this shows level. It left me feeling that I had just eaten a square of processed cheese, I hope this show improves as it is it makes Popstars look good.

Keep singing.

From what little I know of the other versions the 'bad guy' is the guy who has a lot of money riding on the success, or lack there of, the winner.

If you break down when one person calls you a bad singer how are you going to react when there's "I hate X" websites.

This guys money is BMG's money for promotting the winner and cutting a CD he is not putting up the cash for the whole show. Bad behaviour is no excuse and this is premeditated behaviour. Most of these people have never performed in front of an audience or auditioned so being castigated on national TV is just an act of cruelty. I don't think, given peoples reactions, that they were aware of what they were in for from this "bad guy" character. Even seasoned performers have broken down at somepoint in their careers or still get stage fright so reacting badly or not handling criticism at a first performance isn't a good indication of anything.

Yep Dicko is the bad guy, and he's the one "signing the cheques". They made it clear that they weren't their to stroke peoples egos, but to find talent. the contestants knew what they were in for.

Don't feel sorry for them.

The people dressed as Lizards, covered in Superglue, singing I'm a little teapot etc didn't go expecting to win, they went to get their heads on tele, and they succeeded. When you go to an audition with thousands of people around you, you should go hoping for the best expecting the worse. The people who ran off crying and screaming about how the judges were bastards are not going to make it. The people who nodded
and said "Yep, I understand" are far better off.

Besides which, do you think they would be treated any nicer if they rocked up at Sony or wherever for an audition? If they even got in the door.

However, I thought some of the comments of peoples appearances (eg, your voice isn't strong enough to overcome the way you look) were harsh. But hardly something that they wouldn't have heard before, and known that they would want to sign a pretty person for Australia Idol.

was there an english version? I thought it was only american and canadian.

either way i didn't see it but i remember seeing things on entertainment tonight with this so called "bad-guy" telling people to drop a few pounds etc.

It's part of the concept, people just need to get used to it and live with it..personally that would be the only things that would make me/keep me watching.

The kids love it.

Listen Thursday night between 8pm - 10pm for all Australian music on Return to Oz.

Personally I thought the guys on the panel were fucking rude. Yes there were twats that deserved the shit they got for being twats and wasting people time, but some of the comments regarding peoples looks etc were uncalled for. I turned it off after about 10 / 15 minutes and that's how it will stay as well. The whole thing is a wank if you ask me.

Reagrdless of the money these people have riding on it there's no need to humiliate people. I think it just shows how little class and style these people have.

Well there's my two cents on the latest piece of shite coming through the idiot box. *goes off to do something constructive*

The UK version was the original, created by the same guy who brought us the Spice Girls.
