I have to admit that before this week and all this uproar I had never heard of BTN.

you didn't ever have to watch it at school?

at our school we sat down every tuesday mornings at around 10 (i think it was) and watch it. no one actually watched tho. we were about 9 years old at the time, and they were teaching us about politics. *g*

I didn't even know that BTN was still on until it was axed. We watched it at my school too (15 years ago). It's a good and valueable show that should be saved even if only one or two kids in the class take something away from it.

I watched it pretty much every week in grade six, and we all had to "take notes" - a note-taking tutorial, if you will. Pity, I've still got no idea how to take notes.
Then we'd have a quiz at the end of the show.
In any case, I thought it was a great program, that presented news issues in a news program, but was really geared towards kids - and I think it worked.

Letter in that bastion of truth, the Hun

With the ABC having to trim costs, it would seem to be an appropriate time to drop the very Left-wing Media Watch.
Stifling the usually well-balanced Foreign Correspondent and cutting out children's material seems to be sour grapes by management and programmers.
The organisation needs to remind itself that it belongs to all os us, not just the small minority who get their kicks out of watching whingers taking negative shots at the movers and shakers of the world.
B. Carter, Box Hill North

Anyone else spot the oblique reference?

And I'd hardly call media watch left wing... again, it's said in such a derogatory way.

And exactly how do they think the ABC is supposed to stay balanced WITHOUT left-wing shows? All the shows can't be balanced in and of themselves, and opinions are voiced that can't be controlled by the ABC. They have to have some left-wing perspectives and some right-wing, but it's widely acknowledged that there's more than enough right-wing attitudes in commercial media to balance out anything the ABC does.

The other question I can't help asking is, why does this person automatically assume they're in the majority?

Don;t we all generally assume we are in the majority in our opinions *shrug*

The ABC should provide a balanced, unbiased viewpoint irrespective of what other stations are doing.
Of course, the balanced, unbiased viewpoint would be that the current Federal government is massively corrupt... And we can't have anyone suggesting that!

ABC budget cuts

all this debate about which shows should be cut is exactly what the government is after. it turns people in the abc against each other. as andrew denton said recently why aren't people asking the government why they had to cut $26 million dollars from the abc when two years ago they spent more than that advertising a GST we were already going to have, and lining the pockets of kerry packer and kerry stokes??
the abc needs shows like btn, media watch, foreign correspondent, denton and glass house. but let's remember it wasn't the abc trying to cut shows, it was the government who cut the budget by $26 million and tough decisions had to be made. personally i would have cut a couple of old british comedies and some cooking shows, but make no mistake there is definitely an agenda being run against the glass house by richard alston's office because of a certain comedian's comments. comments for those who are not aware of them (and i must admit i didn't hear them, i am only passing on what i read in the sydney morning herald) seemed to be more a joke about the abc than alston. if i am not mistaken the joke was in relation to a news item about abc bias, and he said: "the abc is not biased, richard alston only thinks that because he is a right-wing pig-rooter". not amazing satire, but pretty funny i think, when everybody else seems to scared shitless to say anything. i must admit i'm not even that big a fan of his work, but i am a big fan of freedom of speech, and i'm writing a letter to the editor defending his show, and the abc's proud tradition's of gnw, late show, big gig, money or the gun, daas kapital etc for every one i see published that says the abc shouldn't spend money on comedy.
ps. sorry, this was meant to be a short note to pass on andrew's comment i heard on the radio but i got a bit fired up.

We used to watch BTN... and Channel 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Does anyone else remember that one?

BTN is back... kind of. Behind Ten News. That's right Ten has picked it to start in January.

I would climb up on my soapbox but of the three commerical news I think Ten's is the lesser evil. Can it even be called news? It's a collection of the feel good stories from the end of the news, sport and Tim Bailey being a dickhead.

The commercial networks just love to pilfer anything from the ABC they can get there hands on

At least young kids will still be able to have the same experiences that I did, watching BTN and writing up class reports...

Fate…and Johnson and Friends…brought us together.

I can't believe...my account still exists!

Ah, what a shame...

Kids will still have to write up reports every week for that ignorant show. Now part of the Ten McNews (TM) empire.

Am I still angry about having to write weekly reports?
