bit on stingrays

There are 480 known species of stingray and "a stingray lashes its tail only as a defensive measure when it is caught, stepped on, or otherwise disturbed", says Museum Victoria.

According to a 1995 publication, Dangerous Marine Creatures - Field Guide for Medical Treatment, stingrays are the largest of the venomous fish.

The tail of the stingray carries at least one barb or spine that may be up to 37 centimetres long.

"Penetration of a body cavity by a stingray barb may cause major morbidity and even death, particularly with cardiac injury, and requires early surgical referral and management," it states.

Penetrating cardiac injuries have generally been fatal, the publication said.

In 1938, an adult women died after a stab wound to the heart by a stingray. The autopsy showed that the ventricles had been completely transfixed by the barb.

An Australian soldier died in 1945 after a stab wound to the left heart while swimming in seawater baths near Melbourne, Victoria.

I wonder how far into the doco they got. Will there be enough footage for them to cut together as a tribute to Irwin?

I know it was probably just leaked by one of the paramedics or something but man, that strikes me as really, really horrible. what if his kids found out about it online or something? or his wife heard it on the radio?!

argh. fuckin' bastards.
This does suck... but apparently, it said in a story I read, that she was hiking up on Cradle Mountain in Tassie, so getting into contact with her was going to be a little tough. Still sucks major though.

Yeah, that's really sad. I think he was a pretty good guy, heart was in the right place anyway

Also, apparently Colin Thiele died today, South Australian author of greats such as Blue Fin and Aftershock and Storm Boy. I haven't had any corroborating evidence yet though..hold on just checked ABC http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems...9/s1732649.htm aged 85.

I wonder how long it will take shows like Rove etc to start taking the mickey out of Irwin's demise? Three days? Three minutes? Should we run a tab?

heh, as soon as i heard the news, i started wishing gnw was still around. they'd own it over rove

but it's definitely sad news to hear. i never really liked him much but he was genuine and passionate, and there's not enough of that these days.

yeah. The chances of Rove saying alot are slim. The Glasshouse might have a go.
Still wish GNW was still on.

GO GNW!

Still there's always the rumoured special.

Its sad to hear about Steve Irwin. He did so much for Australian Wildlife, and he seemed like a genuinely nice bloke.

Its a shame about Colin Thiele too.

Was he that big of an Aussie icon? The cringe factor is pretty big with him.

The cringe factor is an issue, which is probably why he was bigger overseas than here. However, I think most Aussies realised that he was a decent guy, and he did do a lot for Australian wildlife and conservation.

People started before the body was even cold. And I'm sure there'll be plenty more to jump on the bandwagon to prove how cool they are.
