Although it happened over a week ago, I've only just heard of the death of singer/songwriter Matthew Jay.

I don't know if anyone else here was a fan, or has even heard of him, but I thought I'd share the sad news anyway.

According to his manager, the upcoming musician died after falling from a seventh-floor window last Wednesday (September 24). As yet, there is no official cause of death.

In a statement, his parents explained: "Matthew Jay died late evening on Wednesday, 24th September 2003, killed in a fall from a seventh-storey window.

"It is understood that there was nobody with him in the room at the time and no note was left. His family loved him dearly, admired him greatly and wish Matthew and all who loved him peace and tranquility."

They added: "Matthew lived and died for his music. We hope that his music will live on and help fill the terrible void left in all those who loved him."

Jay, who is said to have been working on new material at the time of his death, received widespread received critical acclaim for his 2001 debut LP 'Draw'.

In his brief career, he played a series of high-profile gigs, supporting the likes of Stereophonics, Dido, Doves and Starsailor.
