Australian Taboos

Hey all,
My boyf has an assignment to do and he was finding it a bit hard to come up with 5 taboos within the Australian culture. His assignment question is: List 5 taboos in Australian society that are not laws, how are these different from prohibitions in other cultures? What does this tell you about Australian culture personality?

If any of you guys can contribute some ideas, it would be much appreciated! Thanks guys!

Um... *thinks* Taking cheap beer to a party, then drinking someone else's crownies. There's a taboo.

Can't really think of any, sorry Moogs.

...but we are not stupid pooeys, so let's rejoice...

I reckon:

suicide
homosexuality (to a certain extent still)
illegitimacy

but then again, Im not sure how firm my grasp of taboo is. Maybe give us a clearer definition of what you want?

The press keep telling me what it is that “I’m doing”
I’m so thankful, without them I wouldn’t know

taboo to talk about or taboo to do.

i mean it isn't taboo to committ suicide but it's taboo to talk about it mainly because of laws restricting the reporting of it in newspapers.

Visit www.edgeradio.org.au

The kids love it.

Have to aree with Newt on the Bali topic. I think that hit a little too close to home for most comedians to dare touch it.

I would like to say homosexuality was taboo, but unfortunately it's getting an awful lot of television time at the moment, so maybe you could say that it's acceptable for entertainment purposes but taboo as a life style choice? Maybe.

Umm. There are a lot of other contentious issues, but none that I'd say were strictly off limits. Sorry I couldn't really help.

Given that we have one of the largest openly gay communities in the world just how taboo is it.

What is considered "taboo" is completely dependent on the person, I think... I mean - there are very few things I consider taboo... but that's just me.

Mind you, a good example of this was something one of my tutors was saying one time when we were talking about taboo, was she was taking a particular tutorial and the topic was taboo - this girl had just come in and apparently the tutor turned to her and asked her what colour her mentrual blood was. And this girl went off her nut at the tutor (she didn't realise this student was going to freak out like that). That was a classic example of taboo - obviously talking about that to that girl is taboo.
