Surely smacktard of the day has to go to the rioting residents of the Shire. Firstly Cronulla is not their beach. Anyone should be able to go there. Secondly the behaviour of the middle eastern people that they're bashing up is really no different to theirs. My friends and I have been intimidated and harassed by as many if not more blonde haired surfies at Cronulla than we have middle eastern people. It was always clear that the Shire was nowhere near as diverse and tolerant (not just racially but in many other ways) as other parts of Sydney, but it's disgusting to see it displayed so forcefully.

Close runner up would have to go to the comments I've heard from people supporting the rioters which included such things as "it's because middle eastern boys aren't taught how to respect anyone" and "all this trouble caused by those boys is caused by the fact that they can't swim and are jealous of the lifeguards who can".

That's what started it - people from out of the area telling visitors it was "their" beach.
Doesn't make the violence against the police right, of course, but the root cause is the smacktards trying to claim a beach as their own. I think it's good that people are still willing to stand up for such things, though a peaceful turn out would have made the point much more eloquently...

I know that the non-locals aren't completely blameless, but five thousand people showing up with the intention to bash anyone of middle eastern appearance who dares show up on the beach is a huge overreaction. You're right that a peaceful turn out would have been a much better way to demonstrate that the beach is for everyone. I'm not entirely convinced though that a lot of the locals view the beach as anything but theirs though. I just don't like the way that until virtually today the locals were represented as a well behaved and innocent party in this situation.

the news footage tonight showed a bunch of kids (around 16 or so) chanting "no lebs" and wearing shirts that said "fuck off, we're full" inside a drawing of australia. i wanted to throw up. where do kids, fucking high school kids, get this shit from? who teaches them that racist riots are perfectly fine? it's so fucking depressing that even the younger generations, the ones who are supposed to be more progressive and accepting, are actually as backwards, if not more, than all the older ones.

after watching the news report, i wondered what would happen if the incident last weekend had involved aboriginal people, or even anglo-australians. would anyone give a shit then? can't tell an aboriginal to 'fuck off back home' now, can you? and if it was an anglo-australian, people would search for a reason why it happened, instead of drawing the conclusion that all middle-eastern-looking people are after the blood of all white people living in the shire. what a revolting, saddening night.

second smacktard of the day goes to my dear mum. i was talking about mardi gras today, and mum got up on her high horse and asked me what my fascination with 'gays' was and etc etc etc. she was telling me how she worked with some lesbians when she was younger, they made her sick and she couldn't believe how many lesbians used to work in her industry.
