| MOSH Addict | Smacktards: Yarra Trams I was on a tram, believed I had validated my ticket (which had more than $10 value remaining). Got stopped by an inspector, apparently my ticket wasn't validated. He wouldn't let me validate it, or buy another, or any of the other things that I could have done according to the law to escape an Infringement. I only know the law because I went to the State Library and looked it up in the Acts of Parliament - you can't access it any other way, it's 'not for public view' on the DOI website. I wrote a letter to the DOI saying why I think the Infringement was not valid. They send me back one that says 'your version of events is different to that of the Authorised Officer. Therefore, pay your fine, or take the matter to court'. Great system they have - make it so hard for someone to fight you, and they'll probably just pay to avoid the hassle. | ||

| MOSH Addict | I've now been informed (by independent legally-minded friend) that if I take it to the Magistrate and the matter is decided against me, I may have to pay their court costs. Screw that. Maybe I should go on Today Tonight or A Current Affair (whoever pays more) and bitch about it? | ||

The inspectors are so aggressive - I don't understand that, I mean what does that serve? When your calm with people you get a rational response. Never mind if they are completely in the wrong, they issue the fine and then tell you to challenge it if you disagree. So black and white. I think in my case they realised they were wrong, and just pretended to send one out. Regardless, what right do they have to terrorise people?

| MOSH Addict | I'm still really pissed off. I can't get my ticket back without the tiny piece of paper they gave me at the time (though no doubt they have their own record of it). So I lose a ticket worth approx $10.40, and have to pay them $211 - which is about what I earned last week. So I'm out that much money and I HAD a valid fucking ticket. | ||

Maybe you could get some leniency if you've never had a fine before, etc? Don't really like your chances though, they're not really interested in being fair because they know you're not likely to win in court anyway. ![]() Do they have security cameras on the trams? And is it something that might be picked up on the footage if they check? Not sure how trams work. ![]()

I have had a fine before (that's why my fine was $211 and my bf got one for the same offence (different day) that was $180-something). I was guilty of the first offence though. If a normal ticket is $9, and a concession ticket is $3... I've been told that my only avenue of appeal is the courts, but I really don't think I'll win. Goddamn bureaucracy.

Reputation: ![]() Reputation Power: 4 | You could always try just never paying for your ticket anymore, then just cough up for the fine when they catch you out. I like to think of it as a tab with Metlink, rather than paying up front ![]() ...but I'm not helping, am I? (I don't want to do my homework. Procrastination is way funnerer.)

| MOSHer | Depending on which trams you use and how often, you might actually end up staying in front. | ||
