Say No to Racism and Stand for Peace

I don't think I'd be able to go to this - but I encourage all who can.

---
After recent events which you all know off, the majority of people are
sickened by the racism of so called Australians.

That is why today I call for all real Australians, who still believe in a
multicultural society, in a fair and just Australia for all to converge on
the steps of Sydney Town Hall Sunday the 18th of December and show what it
really is to be Australian.

Peacefully our voice will be strong and only by leading by example can we
triumph.

I'm not sure it's a good idea. The best intentions of the people organising it might not outweigh the idiot factor that will start trouble.

Son: Is there anything we can do to get Buffy back?
Mom: Well, we could join together in prayer.
Son: Uh huh. Is there anything useful we can do?
Mom: No.

I'll bring my baseball bat in case any un-Australian people turn up.

The shit that went down in Cronulla was first organised as a peaceful protest, and then idiots started sending out the "bash a leb!' smses and it all went to hell.

And for the sake of patriotic pride: real Aussies bash people with cricket bats, not baseball bats.

There's been concerns at Hurstville too (which is where I work and virtually live). There were police and firebrigades and concerns about trouble at the Westfield shopping centre.

It would be nice if the protest at Townhall on Sunday could go down peacefully, but it seems unlikely. Someone will probably try to start something.

Here's one for Melbourne this Sunday:

Unity in Diversity: celebrate multicultural Australia with a picnic for
peace

A peaceful celebration of multiculturalism is planned for this Sunday
18/12/05, beginning with music and speeches at the State Library on Swanston
St in Melbourne's CBD, then a
festive walk to Treasury Gardens where families and individuals from all
backgrounds and all walks of life are invited to a Picnic for Peace.

"Our aim is to create a space to focus on the positive aspects of
multiculturalism," said spokesperson, Rosanne Bersten. "We deplore the
racist violence in Sydney and instead want to bring people together to get
to know each other, regardless of their heritage or religion, whatever
their background ? Anglo-Celtic, Arabic, Aboriginal, African, Asian or a
mix of Dutch and Eastern European like me."

"We hope people at the picnic would get to know a stranger and share a
meal with them. Our motto is 'be a friend, not afraid'."

The timing is deliberately to coincide with the threat of continued
violence in Sydney. A similar peaceful rally will take place in Sydney,
organised by United Against Racism.

Details:
Date: Sunday, December 18, 2005
12pm: Meet at State Library, Swanston St, Melbourne, for speeches and music.
1pm: Festive walk to Treasury Gardens. Participants are encouraged to
bring musical instruments and their dancing shoes.
2pm ? 5pm: Picnic for Peace. Bring a picnic meal to share, an open heart
and hope for a multicultural Australia.

About Unity in Diversity
We are an unaffiliated group of individuals from a variety of backgrounds
who have come together in response to the recent events in Sydney. We have
no political agenda or membership and we welcome participation by all
groups who are willing to put aside political, religious and ethnic
differences to embrace cultural diversity and harmony. We stand for peace,
love and unity and believe that a harmonious multicultural Australia is
possible.

For more information: http://www.unity-diversity.org.
