Leaked copies of the book are now available to download if you know where to look. Rowling's publishers refuse to confirm or deny if it's the real thing, naturally making everyone think it's the real thing. I would recommend buying the actual book, however. The 'leaked' copy is a pdf file with photos taken of every page*.

*Not that I've seen it of course, I wouldn't do a naughty thing like illegally downloading something.

I guess so. My housemates have been calling me a paedophile for the past week.

Rowling outs Hogwarts head Dumbledore

AP - Harry Potter fans, the rumours are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay.

JK Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series, outed the beloved character while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall in New York. After reading briefly from the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, she took questions from audience members.

She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love".

"Dumbledore is gay," the author responded to gasps and applause.

She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. "Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down".

Dumbledore's love, she observed, was his "great tragedy".

"Oh, my god," Rowling concluded with a laugh, "the fan fiction."

Potter readers on fan sites and elsewhere on the internet have speculated on the sexuality of Dumbledore, noting that he has no close relationship with women and a mysterious, troubled past. And explicit scenes with Dumbledore already have appeared in fan fiction.

Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, she spotted a reference in the script to a girl who once was of interest to Dumbledore. A note was duly passed to director David Yates, revealing the truth about her character.

Rowling, finishing a brief "Open Book Tour" of the United States, her first tour there since 2000, also said that she regarded her Potter books as a "prolonged argument for tolerance" and urged her fans to "question authority".

Not everyone likes her work, Rowling said, likely referring to Christian groups that have alleged the books promote witchcraft. Her news about Dumbledore, she said, will give them one more reason.

I just came to post that too.

Why'd someone ask if he finds true love anyway. He's dead? People are weird!

She does seem to indicate that gay poeple can't find true love. Or maybe it was the dead thing...

So I'm not the only person who thinks that.

It's hard to tell without context why she said that. Perhaps the question was phrased along the lines of true-love-with-McGonagall, for example.

Are you claiming that gay people can't find true love? That's a little bit homophobic isn't it??

Did Dumbledore, who believed in the prevailing power of love, ever fall in love himself?
JKR: My truthful answer to you... I always thought of Dumbledore as gay. [ovation.] ... Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was.

http://gothamist.com/2007/10/20/jk_rowling_to_n.php

That website has a link to a transcript of the evening...That wasn't the entire answer to that question, but I didn't really want to put the whole thing in. My thought is just that she mentioned him being gay first to lead into the Grindelwald thing, but only the "he's gay" part was reported.

What Mythor said. The news reports I saw stated that the question was 'did Dumbledore ever find true love' and that JKR answered 'he is gay' (rather than 'yes, he did, and it was a man' or somesuch.)

Chances are the actual answer she gave (rather than the snippets in the stories) was something else. I'd not be surprised if she said 'Grindewald was his ture love.' - Just noticed the link jasumin provided. Doesn't look like the question or answer even mentioned true love. Stupid newspapers. Grr.

I know he believed in the power of love as a protective force, but relationship-wise...? Meh, who knows?
