general harry potter news

decided to make this nice general potter thread so i didn't have to start a new one each time i had something new to obsess over

a few bits of info, fresh from mugglenet:

- the last book that does not yet have a title is rumoured to be released on july the 7th next year. that's the 07/07/07 kids! tackorama!

- the order of the phoenix movie is due to be released in the US, UK and Canada on the 13th of july next year. that's a spooky friday the 13th, hurrah for them.

- HOWEVER. the australian release of the same film? is coming out two months later. oh joy. the official australian release date is september the 6th, 2007. and this is the main reason i started this thread, so i could whinge about this being so fucking ridiculous. two whole months!! everyone! show warner bros how much this sucks by downloading the film and not paying to see it! either that or work it into your plans to be in the UK, US or Canada when it's released. it's rather convenient for me, since i plan to be in the UK by then anyway, but still! download movies for great justice!!

- aberforth dumbledore, albus's brother, is going to make an appearance in the fifth film. since he's barely mentioned in the fifth book, you can probably take this as a clue that he's gonna be important in the last book.

"Deep down you want to get a gun and fucking shoot everyone, but you can't, right?" - Matthew Bellamy, NME Magazine.

Find out who the Australian distributor is and write them a letter to tell them to pull their collective fingers out. There's no good reason for it to be released two months late. None whatsoever.

If we're going to be shafted for two whole months then I won't be paying for it in any form - cinema or DVD. Two months for an english language movie is a fucking disgrace and I won't stand for it.

Oh and it's the "last" book, not the last book. She'll write more.

i'll bet that they're doing it to cash in on school holidays sales again, exactly the reason they gave for goblet of fire even though they didn't even position the release date for that in the holidays. july the 13th is probably just at the end of the july holidays or one week out of them, so they'll wait until the next lot to make more money.

which is bullshit of course, since schools do group excursions to see the damned films and anyone who was planning on seeing it will just go fucking see it anyway. kids will skip school for this - i did when i was in high school! they'll probably make more money putting it on on the actual release date coz then people won't download it and kids who weren't going to see it will end up going with their school group! it makes more sense!! >.<

would the australian distributor just be the australian branch of warner bros? coz that's where the official information is coming from. but yes! letter writing campaign ahoy!

hehehe, i don't doubt that she'll write more, but she swears blind that this is the final in the series. she said there's a possibility of an encyclopaedia-type book though - all the details of all the characters, so the obsessives can get their fill *preorders*

I don't know who the Australian distributor is, but the Aussie WB seems a likely guess. I told you to find out so I don't have to.
But yes, they're encouraging piracy by delaying it that long. A few days would still have the diehards itching to download, but months is just asking for trouble.

Petition Online Plea to Warner Bros.

feel the outrage! i know it's only an online petition and they don't tend to count for much, but there's a general feeling that if we get enough signatures and use the words 'piracy' and 'illegal downloading' enough, someone will pay attention.

please sign up people

I think I've made my opinion on petitions clear before.
But I signed it anyway. Maybe this one will be the one to effect change.

I may also write a proper letter to send in later.

i've been poking about the WB website, trying to find a place to complain properly, but have not been able to find anything as yet haven't really looked too hard though...got distracted by V for Vendetta

and i can't remember what you've said about petitions in the past, but yay for signing it anyway

Don't kill Harry, authors urge Rowling

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=119044
Wednesday Aug 2 08:35 AEST

Two of America's top authors, John Irving and Stephen King, have pleaded with JK Rowling not to kill the fictional boy wizard Harry Potter in the final book of the series.
But Rowling made no promises.
"My fingers are crossed for Harry," Irving said at a joint news conference before a charity reading by the three writers at New York's Radio City Music Hall.
The author of The World According to Garp and a string of other bestsellers said he and King felt like "warm-up bands" for Rowling, who is working on the seventh and last book in the Harry Potter series, and who has said two characters will die.
King, who shot to fame in 1974 with Carrie, said he had confidence that Rowling would be "fair" to her hero.
"I don't want him to go over the Reichenbach Falls," King said in a reference to Arthur Conan Doyle's effort to kill off the character of fictional detective Sherlock Holmes.
Pressure from fans eventually led Conan Doyle to resurrect Holmes, who was found in a later story to have survived.
Rowling, a Briton whose books have sold 300 million copies worldwide according to her publishers, said she was well into the process of writing the final book.
"I feel quite liberated," she said.
"I can resolve the story now and it's fun in a way it wasn't before because finally I've reached my resolution, and I think some people will loathe it and some people will love it, but that's how it should be."
"We're working towards the end I always planned but a couple of characters I expected to survive have died and one character got a reprieve," she said, declining to elaborate.
Asked about the wisdom of killing off fictional characters, Rowling said she didn't enjoy killing the major character who died in book six - for the sake of those who haven't read it yet she avoided naming the victim - but she said the conventions of the genre demanded the hero go on alone.
"I understand why an author would kill a character from the point of view of not allowing others to continue writing after the original author is dead," she added, leaving the door open to the worst fears of some fans - that Harry could die.
King recalled that when he had a character kick a dog to death in his novel Dead Zone he received more letters of complaint than ever, to his surprise.
"You want to be nice and say 'I'm sorry you didn't like that,' but I'm thinking to myself number one, he was a dog not a person, and number two, the dog wasn't even real," he said.
"I made that dog up, it was a fake dog, it was a fictional dog, but people get very, very involved," King said.
Rowling noted that Irving had killed off many more characters than she had.
"When fans accuse me of sadism, which doesn't happen that often, I feel I'm toughening them up to go on and read John and Stephen's books," she said.
"I think they've got to be toughened up somehow. It's a cruel literary world out there."

WE HAVE A FRONT COVER!!!!!

http://www.mugglenet.com/viewer/?ima...hp7childuk.jpg

ohhhhh that is a shiny shiny thing *pets it*

two things that grabbed my attention: ron has godric's sword! that could mean an insane amount of things! and secondly, the picture of the snakes - when that little puffy machine thing in book 4 showed dumbledore a snake when he was asking it questions, and then asked "but in essence divided?" and the snake split in two and harry (nor me) has any fucking clue what was happening? that will be answered! and it's on the covers, so it might be important! hurrah!

well, it's the last book, so of course it will be answered, but i get excited about details and things i remember -_-

COVER

[edit] here's the adult uk/aust cover: http://www.mugglenet.com/viewer/?ima...hp7adultuk.jpg
slytherin's locket! horcrux horcrux horcrux!

and the us cover:
http://www.mugglenet.com/viewer/?ima...s/dhusfull.jpg
the dark lord, looking particularly rotten! and a bunch of 'jebus help me!' gestures!
