I can't believe you just called me a goth - albeit psuedo - I might have to go cry into said boots.

Yeah... but then what would I do with all this time?

I know that feeling. I celebrated this week when I was rostered on 8 hours. I can almost afford a tank of petrol now.

I have the opposite problem. I'm doing part-time postgrad (which will now interfere with my sleep, yay), working 35 hours a week and the boss keeps trying to give me more shifts.

AAARRRGGGHHHH! I feel better now.

I have been reading fiction online. I ain't being picky about the subject matter; I am looking to be mildly entertained 'cause most of the stuff I have found doesn't even measure up to that.

I have noticed that a couple of different authors used the word(s) "his self" and "hisself". Now, I remember my grammar and I remember being taught that this was incorrect. The correct word is "himself".

But then for a moment, I doubted myself. So I turned to my trusty resource of words -- dictionary.com. The word "hisself" was there. The meaning was "himself". This cannot be. I don't want to live in a world were "hisself" is in the dictionary.

meh, it's a .com. It was probably written by Americans.

Just because something is in the dictionary doesn’t mean it should be used, e.g. ‘youse’ is in the dictionary. This just means that its use has been widespread enough to be recorded. The downside of dictionary.com is that it doesn’t offer a lot of other information, such as saying it’s a colloquialism or in non-standard use.

End of nerdiness.

Dictionary.com does list some words as being "non standard" (ain't) or "informal/slang" (gimme) or even "vulgar slang" (shitcan)

I don't really think of dictionary.com as a hardcore guide to the English language, it's more useful as a tool for discovering the meanings of obscure words and occasionally acronyms. Especially the extremely obscure words that are often used improperly by people trying to look smarter than they are.

If you want a dictionary to read for fun, UrbanDictionary.com is good.

I have long been a fan of the word "ain't" and I remember when it wasn't in the dictionary.

My spelling sucks. I use it to check my spelling. I also love to get into semantic arguments. I use it to back up meanings of words. Mainly though, it helps me spel write.

That one is hilarious... some of the words in there are just... so... interesting.

I don't like their definition of "gutter monkey".

yeah, that's a pretty crappy one there GM. Some of the Bushisms and acronyms are pretty funny though. I quite like B.O.B.F.O.C. (body off baywatch face off crimewatch)

Not a rant, but…

Did it take anybody else ages to work out where they knew that annoying voice from in The Fast and The furious: Tokyo Drift’s main character? Li’l Caleb from American Gothic is all grow’d up. (Or perhaps I’m the only one willing to admit watching such utter shite )
