Evidence Eliminator??? WTF!

Can anybody help me out, or at least explain to me, what this thingo is!

My bro wasjust going into the net when this popup pops up (bad habit they have) saying stuff about the govt and protect your computer lalalalaaa.
However, and this is the trippy bit, there was, on the website an enitire list of the contents of his C drive (with things only his C drive would have).

Has anybody had this happen to them? It looks like a crock, but its just a bit wierd. Is it anything to be stressed about? (

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks :exclamat:

That's a charming little piece of code that tells your computer to list the contents of your C drive on the screen. No, it's not sending the information anywhere. It just looks really freaky if you don't know how it works.

Don't fret, that is a trick they play with html, i've seen it done before but am not exactly sure how it works. I think that since everyone pretty much has a C drive, the people who wrote the code simply created a frame (in which you can display a web page) with the source as the c drive.

With internet explorer you can explore the contents of your own drive. Type "c:\" and hit enter, and you'll see your drive contents as well. Ignore evil pop ups!

Phew! thanks for that
Thanks so much, I can sleep easy now knowing that the government is not truly after my brother.
Thanks alot, actually, the whole C drive thing- thats quite clever, really had me going. Popups suck, but that one at least had some thought up into it

Thank god I have access to people who actually know an annoying pop up from a threat to national security

thanks alot
I can sleep easy now,

Out of curiousity, (and I know zip about computers, so I may be way off the ball), would calling your c drive something else (let's say Fred) prevent that?

No, naming it something else would have no effect. Windows still knows it's the C: drive, regardless of what strange name you attach to it.

There was supposed to be a vulnerability that would allow a remote website to access a file on your computer, so long as they knew the name. So they couldn't steal a word document off your computer if they didn't know the filename, but they could take something simple like your windows system.ini file, or something.
I can't remember if this was just a rumour though.
In any case, I know that if you have an up to date browser it is no longer an issue.

Most sites that show you something like that are trying to sell you their software. There's a similar one where they tell you that your computer is "broadcasting an IP address" when it is doing no such thing. And there's no real way to completely hide your IP anyway, since that's how other computers or servers contact you to send you information - like webpages!

I did find that page particularly amusing, which is why I remember it, because the IP "my" computer was supposedly broadcasting was not my computer's IP at all, it was the IP of my ISP's proxy server. If you know what that means, you'll know why it's amusing trying to scare me with that info.

ooooh spooky!! i reckon the worst thing that i've had, was i was looking thru my msn received files, and there was one there saying 'contacts' with the little msn logo. so i thought, oooh and clicked on it. suddenly there's this big thing on my screen saying 'delete C drive now?' with the yes no, and i tried to hit no but it wouldnt let me, and then it showed tihs thingy 'searching C: files' with a list of all the files on the puter going really fast, and then it said deleting C drive. and then this thingy came up saying windows detects no programs available, shut down computer now. and then the screen went black. and then while im alt control deleting like my life depended on it, this thing came up saying GOTCHA and it was just an ad for a game. but it scared the absolute SHIT out of me, cos its my mums computer! and she woulda killed me!

I came across that too ... it's so scary the first time it happens, but sooo satisfying when you see your friends' faces after you send it to them.
