My Dad bought an official multi-region Pioneer DVD player (one that actually came like that, not fiddled with just to play other regions), and we are finding now that we can't play a few movies. Shrek and Bridget Jones' Diary for instance. The woman at the store said we'd have to buy another player to watch those movies, but instead we went the cheaper option - we bought those movies on DVD from the US. hehe

With the new technology by the DVD companies to stop piracy, you can actually get one of the new Pioneer players to combat this. (Allegedly. I was told this by a gentleman at Harvey Norman, and we all know what they get up to at Christmas ;) ) You can buy an all region chip and install it yourself, but it does nullify the warranty. I think a dual laser DVD player would be good too; as they can play both CD-R and CD-RW with no problems. After you burn, you can flog the videos for megabucks on ebay ;)
