3d modelling

hey all just wondering if any of you extremely smart/funy/kind people have done any 3D modelling around here..

i have to teach myself how to do it as part of my traineeship and i'm trying to find some software to download so i can do some tutes. i have got director but i can't find any modelling tutes and I have tried 3d studio max but they don't have trials of the software. It's important that the software be an industry standard but no names are coming to mind at the moment

anyone had any experience in this?

any help would be very much appreciated!

generally speaking, 3d modelling/animation software has three levels. the first being 3d studio max, which i actually thought there was a trial version, but maybe i'm wrong.
next level up is lightwave, but i've got no idea about that
highest level is Maya - that's the program star wars uses etc, but i'm also quite sure there is a trial version.. or perhaps i'm thinking an academic version... ahh, can't keep up... but yeah, those three are gonna give you industry standard results.
hope this helps

Only after 3d studio max type stuff, they only have a demo cd not a trial version...grr. I probably won't even use this in my job and if i did it wouldn't be anything quite as complicted as star wars!

thanks for you help anyway

the programs are similar, and do similar things, it just how complex (and how expensive) it gets

yeah i understand that but in the industry i'm in something on the level of 3d studio max and director is what i'm after, there's no point even trying the others because i'll never come across them as a graphic artist.

Maya Personal Learning Edition is what zinja is referring to I think. It has all the modelling functionality of the normal program but you can't export anything to any other useful format. It's free for non commercial use, though.

gmax is a stripped down version of 3DS that is free. It's geared more towards gaming model creation, as the idea was for game developers to release plugins to let people easily export their models into useful game models. It's free though and is apparently almost identical to the 'proper' 3D Studio. Fair few tutes available for it, so you could get some knowledge from doing them.
