| MOSH Regular | I got around to it eventually.... The Daily Telegraph, 25/4/03 Laughter to Byrne By Ben Sharkey With the Melbourne International Comedy Festival finished Sydneysiders can look forward to seeing the international stars who have decided to stick around and tour Australia. One of those performers is Irishman Ed Byrne who is touring Australia with American funny man Arj Barker. ``I love doing comedy in Australia,'' Byrne says sincerely. ``Australians don't mind having the piss taken out of them, which is great and it gives me a chance to practise my Australian accent.'' For those who have not seen Byrne perform, he describes his stand-up style as anecdotal observational humour. ``I mix it up a bit and am either laid-back or in your face. I'm basically a miserable bastard and apart from my bed there's not too much that I like,'' he says. ``So I just slag off everything from dentists to crap musicians.'' While the comedian has been to Australia before, he has rarely performed in Sydney. ``In Melbourne I have to do new material because they've heard me before. ``However, in Sydney, because most people don't know my stuff, I can just do all my best routines.'' Byrne says the hardest part of performing in countries outside of Britain is making sure all his jokes are still relevant. ``I really try and learn a bit about the country I'm in before I start making jokes. ``I think it is almost insulting to the audience to make jokes that they couldn't possibly understand,'' he says. While Byrne, who turned 31 this week, has had a great time in Australia, he has his girlfriend to thank for saving him from leaving Melbourne without a penny to his name. ``I was playing blackjack and went from over $100 up, to $14 down and she told me to stop. Girlfriends are great at stopping men from doing really stupid things,'' he says. * Ed Byrne and Arj Barker will be performing at The Basement from tomorrow till May 1. Tickets are $34.60 and can be booked through Ticketek 92664800 or online at www.ticketek.com or at The Basement on 92512797. | ||
