For someone who has made it in the competitive world of Hollywood, Andy Hallett, who plays Lorne the Host on [i:post_uid0]Angel[/i:post_uid0] the spin-off TV show of [i:post_uid0]Buffy, The Vampire Slayer[/i:post_uid0], is remarkably down to earth.

Perhaps it's because the modest 26-year-old refuses to forget what it was like when he was looking for his big break in Tinseltown.

After graduating from college in Massachusetts, on the east coast of the US, Andy hit the road with a friend and drove west to Los Angeles. He sold gym memberships to wannabe actors until he got a job as a runner, delivering scripts to Paramount Pictures.

"I always remember that the guy on the gate at the studio was so mean to me. He made me park miles away and walk in," Andy recalls. "Now, when I get to the gate and they see 'cast memeber' on my ID, they change their tune and are so nice. It's ridiculous that people are like that. It's stupid - but that's the way Hollywood works. When runners bring scripts to my house now, I'm extra nice."

Choosing to live in the heart of Hollywood where he says "it's seedier but very lively", Andy avoids the more pretentious elements of the town's society. And it was in one of his local "dives" where Andy was singing that Joss Whedon, co-writer of [i:post_uid0]Angel[/i:post_uid0], created the character of Lorne the Host - a demon who can read people when they sing.

"I feel so lucky," Andy says. "I know others who have been in Hollywood for 10 years and haven't got anywhere, and I get a job within three years."

Despite his move to California, Andy says he was always very shy about his ambitions. "I didn't tell anyone because in this town everyone wants to be an actor. They're not just people with small part-time jobs, either. I met a policeman who wanted to be an actor the other day. So, I was embarrassed and was trying to avoid falling into the stereotype."

Andy gave up singing in the school choir - he felt it was uncool - and didn't sing again publicly until R & B singer Patti LaBelle dragged him on stage.

"When my cousing found out that I sang, she said, "Why did you keep it a secret? You make it sound like a drug habit."

The heavy makeup Andy wears on the show gives him anonymity in public, but it takes three hours to put on.

"I've been begging [the producers] to change it, but every ime I ask them they get annoyed with me," he laughs. "Even though my character is a demon they want him to be as human as possible. But because the show is darkly lit, you just don't get to appreciate the detail."

The prosthetic piece that makes up his face takes an hour to glue on. It's then painted, followed by an hour and a half of airbrushing and, finally, gold colour is added to his hair.

"And just when you thought it couldn't get any more uncomfortable, they pop in contact lenses," he says. "It's awful, but having this role makes it all worth it!"

This in the TV Week that came out today

The Rumour mill is working overtime as the four episode finale of Buffy The Vampire Slayer goes to air in the States this month. No, ex-Neighbours star Holly Valance is not the new slayer, no, there won't be a spin-off series coming out this year; and yes at least one of the characters will die.

Here's what else we know.....Buffy's ex lover Angel will return for the finale. "Angel and Buffy meet, of course, in a perfect moment" says David.

Rogue slayer Faith is back too, but not Willow's ex-lover Tara - Amber Benson rejected an offer to return.

And everything will explode in the last few episodes, says the show's executive producer Marti Noxon.

"We have never had more special effects or more production details".

Creator Joss Whedon says "we don't destroy the universe on the last episode, so there's potential for more (spin-off) series or a movie"

At least one Buffy cast member will go on to join the cast of the spin-off series Angel.

"Almost anyone who is available is being talked about - maybe not as a full-time character but to come by for a few episodes" says Marti. "Sarah Michelle Gellar could pop by, but right now, its just a chance."

the Buffy finale is scheduled to air on the Seven Network in August

SoS - we're up to ep 13 now, so in about 9 weeks knowing channel 7 they'll take it off and on and torment us with the 4 or 5 part (i'm not awake yet, I can't remember) finale by spacing it out for weeks... so who knows.

Read about this in today's Herald Sun, just a tiny article saying that Angel has been renewed and Spike was joining. Yay more Spike!!! I have no idea what happens in the finale of Buffy or Angel this year and don't want to know until I actually see the episodes. This year's Buffy has been great so far with old characters popping up even though they may not actually be the characters but are just the First.
