They have a poll as well, but theirs seems to be busted. Maybe it's just being overwhelmed by the "Not offended!" votes...

Actually the voting page just loaded after I posted:
Is The Chaser's dead song skit a step too far?
Yes - Insulting the dead is just not funny. 42% (593 votes)
No - It is edgy comedy, the show's speciality. 57% (793 votes)

A lot closer than I thought it'd be!

They spelt Andrew's last name wrong! It's Hansen not Hanson.

It was funny. But I am glad they didn't say anything nasty about Belinda Emmett. That would have crossed a line.

Reading articles after the fact though, it's interesting to note that Chris Taylor wrote the song and it was 'watered down for TV'. Also it was in Dead Caesar- the play Chris and Andrew wrote together. Oh, and the whole story about Andrew's great grandad dying recently as mentioned before the song, it wasn't true- the story anyway.

Mind you though it does have some truth to it. We do try to make people look better after they are dead when they are celebrities.

Amities,

SS

PS I love Andrew! He's the coolest.

I remember a line that Paul McDermott said that he would be offended if people didn't put the boot in the moment he died. I thought making jokes about dead people was an acceptable practice in Aus.

I personally think it was borderline. I think if you're not a fan of the Chasers then you're going to have a problem with it. It did have some truth in it (let's be honest). I do believe we applaud people a bit too much after death. Let's not forget how much the media bagged Steve Irwin not long before he died after the 'Baby Bob' incident. The media really got into him then, calling him a bad father, by putting his child in the firing line. Then after he died - he became perfect. We are all just human in the end.

We allow free speech, but we also have the ability to turn the channel over if we don't like what we see. I hate Big Brother and Australian Idol, and the way I combat that - I don't watch them!!!

But that's just my little old opinion, and anyone is free to object! That's why we live in a free world!

Did they cross a line? No. There is no line. The POINT of satire is to piss people off and provoke a little thought.

Some people so blindly adhere to "you can't speak ill of the dead" that they turn dead celebrities into demigods, idols who could do no wrong. And it's stupid, because whatever else they are or were, they were human beings, and they had their flaws.

The song had to be harsh, to have any impact. If they'd just been moderate about the flaws of our dead "heroes", no one would have noticed. You push these issues until they become offensive to some people, so that they get noticed. And for every person who goes "OMG U CAN'T SAY THAT", someone else goes "hey yeah, they were a bit of a knob..."

Also, satire, people. Not intended as a personal insult. Intended as commentary on society. Yeesh.

I do think the media has gone a little overboard. I think the hate the way the Chasers attack their (the media) credibility, so they target them back. Especially Today Tonight, they love to put the foot in to the Chasers. Just think back to how (to use an appropriate example) Paul and the Good News Week team used to bag Princess Diana. They took the piss at any opportunity, and nothing was said. I think as a community, we have to lighten up a bit!!

Oh, I think that Today Tonight definately has issues with the song. ie the line: "Even Anna Bloody Coren, yes even she will look a top bloke after death". Definately a direct hit. Considering how much they (Chas and Andrew) pick on her every week (well every time they do it anyway) in 'What have we learnt from Current Affairs?'

If Naomi Robson was still hosting it would have been her in that line.

I could just tell.

And I've actually watched that song more than once and since it was aired and I gotta say it is fairly watered down. I think I actually loved it. Weird huh?

Though I did think of a (I thought) hilarious punishment, get the Chasers to stand in line and squirt them with a hose for their watering down. I thought it might be fun. Probably just me though.

The Chaser's Bore On Everything

Hey, just in case people don’t know about this…

(Tickets are on sale NOW!)

The Chaser's Bore On Everything

Friday, 26 October 2007

A Poncey Literary Event To Promote The Chaser Annual 2007

Come and pay outrageous prices to hear the team behind The War On Everything and our new book bang on about ourselves! We guarantee a 100% self-indulgent gabfest where we chat through the year that was and answer questions until you're sick of the sight of us, and awkwardly try to sneak out the rear exit!

And then, to add blatant exploitation to injury, we'll hang around to pressure you into buying our crappy merchandise so we can sign it to boost our already obscenely overinflated egos.

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet The Chaser team - because there's no way you'd bother to come again!

The Chaser request that all guests involved in the law enforcement industry kindly wait until after the event before arresting the participants.

These events sold out last year, as inexplicable as that is, so book quickly. Tickets at the "bargains, bargains, bargains"* price of $23 (students and under 18s) and $27.
* this use of the Surprise Spruiker's catchphrase is intended to be ironic.

Sydney:
Tuesday 4th December
Wednesday 5th December

Brisbane:
Thursday 13th December

Melbourne:
Date: Tuesday 11th December

Mom: Well, we could join together in prayer.
Son: Uh huh. Is there anything useful we can do?
Mom: No.
