COMEDY FESTIVAL REVIEW

The new Tripod show is just songs and jokes and hasn't the sublime, daggy silliness of their sci-fi musical Lady Robots, but it's all good stuff. The announcement of Yon's recent fatherhood put something of a dent in his weird little guy mystique. But Scod and Gatesy got enough put-downs out of it to restore order.

One of the highlight songs was along the lines of "No daughter of mine will ever become a sex machine" ("No daughter of mine will ever blow your mind"). Their critique of Peter Jackson's King Kong gave well-harmonised voice to what has oft been thought but ne'er so well expressed: "Get to the f---ing monkey!"

The last song saw Scod trying to sing a protest song about why Iraq and not the Congo, which the other two disrupted with groovy dances. But they already had their protest moment with a song pointing out that if you torture people, you turn them into terrorists, even if they weren't before. It was a clever move: Tripod want us to know they care and are aware, but don't want to be seen to take themselves too seriously.
