Haggis hurling anyone?

Haggis to be sure
February 9, 2004 - 9:47AM

A specialist British butcher has placated Scots after he helped organisers of a haggis-hurling competition in Melbourne avoid using fake haggis as planned.

Organisers of the Berwick Highlands Gathering in Melbourne's outer south-east had planned to substitute the traditional dish of organs minced and boiled in a sheep's stomach with sand and sawdust wrapped in hessian, outraging Scots around the country.

It was the first time haggis hurling, a game where the dish is thrown the greatest distance without ruining it, was included in the games.

Organiser Ross Chudleigh today said the group had been concerned real haggis would leave a mess, particularly in yesterday's searing heat.

"We were concerned that real haggis wouldn't be good in an Australian climate," he said.

But the British butcher from Melbourne's south-east came to the rescue, providing real haggis in vacuum-sealed bags.

"The bags were able to be thrown without breaking up when they hit the ground," Mr Chudleigh said.

He said the media reports on the group's proposed use of fake haggis, which made it as far afield as Scotland, helped publicise the event, with around 3,000 people attending.

The event was the 18th annual Berwick clan gathering and also included 17 pipe bands and highland dancing

I'm sure there's a joke to be made about tossing Haggis but I'm damned if I can think of it ...

I saw the topic and I had visions of our Haggis in a giant slingshot or something...I'm actually relieved you're talking about sheep intestines!
