TV's golden couple to wed
By Phillip Koch
July 11, 2004

TELEVISION host Rove McManus and actor Belinda Emmett have announced their engagement after a five-year love affair.

Belinda and Rove will have a private wedding, say friends

"I'm very excited to have a wedding to plan," confirmed Belinda, 30, in an engagement announcement that was released yesterday.

Rove, also 30, proposed to Belinda on Wednesday but television's golden couple are yet to set a date for the nuptials.

"We can confirm that there will definitely be a wedding day but it won't be before we get back from summer holidays next year," Rove said.

The couple met at the star-studded opening of Fox Studios in Sydney in 1999 and have been inseparable since.

They now live in Melbourne, where Network Ten's Rove (Live) is filmed each week.

Belinda captured the heart of the nation in 1998 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a malignant tumour removed when she was 24 years old.

The Umina-born actor was starring in Home And Away at the time and her fighting spirit in the face of such a frightening ordeal won her even more fans.

Three years later the couple were devastated when Belinda was diagnosed with secondary bone cancer while filming The Nugget in Mudgee with Eric Bana and Vince Colisimo.

"I'm doing well and I'm excited to have a wedding to plan," Belinda said yesterday.

Rove, who is one of the highest-paid television hosts in Australia, paid tribute to Belinda after winning his second consecutive gold Logie in April.

"Belinda is just wonderful," he said. "It goes without saying she is undoubtedly the best reward I've ever received.

"I've said it before, and it's the truth, when it comes down to it the only thing that is important is that the two of us are together.

"She is a wonderful person. I'm an extremely lucky guy."

Friends said yesterday that Belinda, who has shunned the limelight since quitting All Saints, was still focussed on fighting the disease.

"She has to deal with getting over it week by week," confirmed one close friend yesterday.

While Rove and Belinda are one of the most popular showbiz couples in Australia, their wedding is expected to be a private family affair.

"He has a lot of family and they are a private couple," explained one friend.

Belinda's publicist Maria Farmer confirmed yesterday that Rove "popped the question" on Wednesday.

Didn't Rove spill the beans (get it) in his last show? I thought I heard him mention something about a wedding.

Drunk Midget to even Drunker Chick - Have you ever had anyone go up on you before?

Son: Is there anything we can do to get Buffy back?
Mom: Well, we could join together in prayer.
Son: Uh huh. Is there anything useful we can do?
Mom: No.
