| Only a strange mind would write and illustrate a nightmarish poem about a marooned group of friends being eaten one after another by fantastic beats and then think "This would be a great book for the Christmas market." But that's is pretty much the way Paul McDermott nutted things out. [i:post_uid0]The Scree, [/i:post_uid0]the first publication by his own company, [i:post_uid0]Cannibal Books[/i:post_uid0], crept onto the shelves in the middle of the festive season and is, perhaps unsurprisingly, only now starting to find notice. A slim, elegant, clothbound hardcover, [i:post_uid0]The Scree[/i:post_uid0] another entrant into the rapidly growing market of Books For People Who Love Books: a carefully made artefact, enjoyable for its tactility as well as it's content. The poem inside the covers owes a little to Edgar Allan Poe, Edward Lear, Tim Burton and the Lewis Carroll of [i:post_uid0]Jabberwocky,[/i:post_uid0] being a grim and grotesque tale of a bad of travellers dismembered by increasingly hideous creatures, all mere insects compared to the big-daddy frightmaker, [i:post_uid0]The Scree.[/i:post_uid0] McDermott's gothicomic pen-and-ink illustrations accompanying the verses are scratchy, sometimes disturbing drawings, which show a preoccupation with the shapes of bones and viscera. McDermott, best known as the former host of[i:post_uid0] Good News Week [/i:post_uid0]and Doug Anthony Allstar, has been making illustrated books for friends since his days at the Canberra School of Art in the early 1980s. He envisages a series of releases and has just finished the next, [i:post_uid0]The Girl Who Swallowed Bees, [/i:post_uid0]which he expects to publish in April. Two others, [i:post_uid0]The Skeleton Dreams[/i:post_uid0] and [i:post_uid0]The First Journey of The "Merry Depressed"[/i:post_uid0] are slated to follow at six-monthly intervals. ok I keep hearing al these weird rumours that he has already released a book after the scree..this isn't true is it...well I'm pretty sure it isn't but yay! and that Tim Burton comparison...that's EXACTELY what i thought...the books are even bound the same way.. if you enjoyed the scree I urge you to read "The Melancholy Death Of Oyster Boy" it's really very very good...and you'll understand exactely why the comparison was made! anyway.. yays | ||
