NBC signs Kiwi comedy duo October 13, 2004 Bret McKenzie (left) and Jemaine Clement Photo: David Alexander/The Press The television network behind hit comedy shows Friends and Seinfeld has signed two New Zealand comedians to develop their own show for American audiences. In what is believed to be a first for Kiwi comedians, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement have been snapped up by NBC after an executive saw them as Flight of the Conchords at the Montreal Comedy Festival in July. Flight of the Conchords, a hit in New Zealand and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, combines comedy with parodies of folk and pop songs. The Hollywood Reporter said NBC casting executive Marc Hirschfeld was impressed with the show, which the duo also performed in New York, featuring "hilarious songs accompanied by hilarious stage banter". Hirschfeld said though music would be an important element of the show, "it will be all based in character comedy, and that's what we love about them". McKenzie and Clement are both overseas, and McKenzie was lying low in Sicily this week. It is understood they will record an album in Germany this year. McKenzie is also known for being an extra in The Lord of the Rings who ended up with a speaking part in The Return of the King after he garnered a cult following. He featured on the front page of USA Today and had a documentary made about him. Clement co-wrote the film Tongan Ninja and is part of another comedy duo, the Humourbeasts, with Taika Cohen. Flight of the Conchords have starred in a television commercial for a British phone company, and were nominated for the Perrier Award for best newcomer at last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. They have also made a pilot episode for BBC radio. Dominion Post

| MOSH Elite | Radio 2 takes Flight Conchords have landed Perrier-nominated folk parodists Flight of the Conchords have landed their own Radio 2 series, with a host of names from the comedy circuit lending a hand. The duo’s improvised show will be broadcast from September, with Keith Barret creator Rob Brydon providing the narration. And comics taking part in the six-part series include Jimmy Carr, Daniel Kitson, Nina Conti, Greg Proops and Dan Antopolski, while fellow Kiwi Rhys Darby plays their manager, Bryan Nesbitt. The show charts how Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement – ‘New Zealand's fourth most popular folk parody duo’ – try to crack the UK’s lucrative novelty music scene. Much of it was recorded on a portable mini-disc at London landmarks including Hyde Park, The Tower of London, Piccadilly Circus - and the first aid room at Broadcasting House. A BBC spokesman said: “Each episode is narrated by Rob Brydon, who saw The Conchords perform at the Edinburgh festival in 2004 and has been a big fan ever since.” The Conchords, who won their Perrier nomination at the 2003 Edinburgh Fringe, also have TV development deals in place with NBC in America and Channel 4 in the UK. | ||

Found this in the The Scotsman newspaper TV/Radio Guide yesterday. Not sure if it's going to be available online as I didn't have time to check. THE FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS Radio 2, 10pm Thursday, 1 September, 2005 The Flight of the Conchords are a New Zealand folk parody act looking for a hit with Frodo, Don't Wear That Ring. This is the premise of a new comedy series starring the duo, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, and narrated by Rob Byrdon. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/comedy/conchords.shtml BTW, one of the funniest things I saw at this years Fringe Festival was last week at the Phat Cave. David O'Doherty and Demetri Martin doing their version of a Flight of the Conchords song including the intro "We are New Zealands's premiere folk parody group"! | MOSH Regular | The BBC do have the facility to Listen Live, and they also tend to store shows for at least a week, in order to 'Listen Again'. I'm sure my old faithful cassette recorder will be coming in handy for the next 6 weeks though, if anyone has any trouble listening online... ![]()
