| MOSH Regular | Triple J will launch a new national drivetime show next Monday, starring two relative newcomers to radio. Stand-up comic Charlie Pickering and music aficionado Nicole Fossati will fill the gap left by Merrick and Rosso’s departure to Nova 14 months ago. Costa Zouliou has been hosting a music show in the 3pm-6pm timeslot while network boss Ed Breslin searched for a new act in the tradition of Triple J’s great drive duos, such as Merrick and Rosso, Helen Razer and Judith Lucy, and Debbie Spillane and Ian Rogerson. Breslin appears confident he has found it. “I’d back this pairing against any of the past – with no disrespect to the people who have come before,” he says. Pickering came to Breslin’s attention last July. “I picked up on this incredible buzz emanating from this bright new Melbourne talent who was staging his own comedy nights in a pub in Brunswick,” Breslin explains. “I flew down on a secret mission to check out his act and thought, wow, this is one of those very special talents.” Breslin gradually introduced Pickering to radio and the Triple J audience with occasional spots on the breakfast show and stints on overnight and weekend shifts. Meanwhile, he was already nurturing a talented young presenter, Nicole Fossarti. A former host on SBS’s Alchemy, Fossarti had a weekly guest spot talking about the dance music scene on the breakfast show. Over the summer she temporarily hosted the night-time show when Breslin “casually” asked Pickering to join her on air a few times. “Charlie is very bright and quick. He comes out with amazingly funny and witty things. Nicole is very confident and sassy. She’s a bit unpredictable and will keep Charlie on his toes.” Pickering, 24, became involved in a sketch comedy group while studying arts/law at Monash University. After graduating, he was offered work at a law firm but decided to set up a comedy room with another budding comedian at Brunswick’s Royal Derby Hotel. “We had a lot of trouble the first few months; no one knew us,” Pickering says. “Over time it became quite popular and we attracted a bit of a cult following.” He has since appeared regularly on ABC-TV’s Friday night comedy show The Glass House. Fossarti, 28, says she is still reeling from the sudden career escalation. After studying contemporary arts at the University of Western Sydney, she worked in an art gallery, travelled, edited 3D World magazine, worked for Sony and presented Alchemy. “I’d only met Charlie once before. We presented the night show together but we got on like a house on fire. - Sue Javes (and there is a pic of charlie that i can scan if anyone wants, but it's green) | ||
