Growing numbers of pop culture fans are falling prey to a bizarre disorder in which they develop an unhealthy obsession with celebrities. Symptoms of celebrity worship syndrome include obsessively collecting photographs of a star, an inability to stop talking about then and an indepth knowledge of their life. In extreme cases, sufferers develop celebrity erotomania, a delusion that the star is in love with them. "As a culture we are becoming more obsessed with celebrities and more fantasy life as a means of escape," Southern Illinois University reasearcher Jim Houran said. Houran said the growing influence of TV was at least partly responsible for the increase in the number of people who cannot stop thinking about their favourite stars. The Illinois research team has developed the first test for the condition, which could be used to grade the severity of the problem, determine treatment and protect celebrities. According to Houran, there are three levels of celebrity worship. Early stage sufferers have a relatively trivial affliction. The second stage involves watching and talking about the celebrity with other fans or friends. It may involve joining a fan club. The third stage includes compulsive behaviour and obsession with details of the star's life. Last century, only celebrities such as Rudolph Valentino might have attracted such zealotry. Today, even soap stars and newsreaders have their own websites IDLE INTEREST - OR IDOL WORSHIP? Do you: # Enjoy watching, reading, or listening to your favourite celebrity? # Think learning the life story of your idol is fun? # Keep up with news about your favourite celebrity as an entertaining pastime? # Love to talk with other fans of your idol? # Like watching or hearing about your idol when you're in a large group? # Find it enjoyable just to be with fans of your idol? # Discuss your celebrity's latest doings with friends? # Feel compelled to learn the habits of your idol? # Keep souvenirs of your star in a special place? # Feel like dying too when your idol dies? Yes to one-three: You have mild CWS. Yes to four-seven: You've got serious CWS. Yes to all: Get a life, you erotomaniac! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Are they serious? It's all shite, I reckon. As if you've got a problem if you answer 'yes' to four or more of those questions. They didn't say anything about going up and nagging them, following them, stealing their things, paying vast amounts of money for merchandise, going to everything they might be at, and all that kinda stuff. Then I think there's a bit more of a problem than what they think is bad. I bet stacks of people answered most of those questions 'yes' - it's just to make you worry about yourself! I'm not obsessed, I can stop anytime I want to, I just need to get myself together, and then everything will be fine. I'm not an addict, I have it under control. You're the one with the problem, always questioning me and watching, well you'll see, I'll stop, just not today. Quit anytime I want......

ahh I love this .. only coz of the word 'erotomania' ... and yeah .. when my idol dies I feel like dying too ... hell when any comedian 'dies' (as in onstage) I quite often feel so badly for them that I feel like dying even if I don't like the performer all that much ... so does that count .. cmon it's the critical fourth yes ...

Erotomania is actually even more obsessive than what they've got listed. It's also when you not only like/love/lust the celeb in question, but you think it's a mutual thing. Even if they don't even know you.

Actually, the DAAS do love me. I can tell be the way they used to look at me when they were on stage. Now, keep this to yourselves, but I heard that they only split up because someone asked me which was my favourite out of the band. If I had answered this question, the other two would instantly have felt rejection beyond what they were capable of withstanding, and so it was easier to kill the band, and then they could become my three favourite individuals (in no particular order). I'm sure the rest of you will find this difficult to understand, because it was always me they were looking at. They used to write me letters as well, but our postie never delivered them out of a bitter jealousy. What a warped character!!

On a slightly serious note, Wouldn't buying magazines like "Hello" and other such "pictures of the famous" publications be a sign of erotomania. Surely phsyciatrists would just hang around newsstands looking for clients? You would be able to commit anyone who ever sat in a doctor's waiting room.

Fault??? It's not my fault that they fancy me! I was just sitting in the audience and they were the obsessed ones. The shrine I have constructed since is just surveillence shots, honest!!

People... I think we need to start some sort of support group. Just think about all those suffering people out there that have something to concentrate their depressive attention to. We can't let all of these sad individuals have something to pre occupy themselves with and take an interest in now can we! We must find a drug! a drug that will wipe out all desire to take an interest in any media/performance related individual. We must put them all on antidepressants (because doctors love to do that) and squash the obsessive compulsive behaviours out of all of them! pfffft. What a crock of shit. Everyone needs an obsession. Sometimes they may reach a slightly unhealthy level but everyone grows out of it eventually. If not... they're commited to a mental institution and placed out of harms way anyhow.

They say that colours represent emotions. If that's true then my life is one pretty warped rainbow!
