the Wil interview just in case you were interested: Will Anderson, Triple J presenter and comedian Turn-ons ... Memento - "It was the best film I saw last year. *I see a lot of films; I really liked it - I watched it about three times to figure out what had gone on." SMS - "I love email, and the SMS thing as well. *I've got a gigantic thumb these days just from SMSing people." Steve Irwin, Crocodile Hunter - "He's just the best! I love that he's so excited about everything. *He's not scared of anything." Buffy - "Buffy is funny, interesting and it's full of cool myths. *I think that really appeals to the inner nerd I try to hide from the general public." Women's ability to take a bra off without removing their shirt - "I like that. *It's very Houdini-like." Turn Offs ... Bounce - "That film made me want to stab myself in the eye with a pen. *It was one of the worst films I've seen in my life. *I got the impression that's what drove Ben Affleck to drink. *Just seeing the rushes from that film he'd have been like, 'Oh, just make the pain go away'." Hype - "Like The Strokes. *It's great, but everyone buys it because they have to have it." Breakfast Shift Radio - "It destroys people. *That's why people don't do breakfast radio forever. *It does f**k up your life." Will's new show Wil by Mouth, is playing at Sydney's Belvoir St Theatre until January 26. *it then tours Adelaide and Melbourne. ok so answer me this .. why is it they spell his name "Will" everywhere except in the name of the show .. do these people not get the 'wil by mouth' joke or are they just stupid? second - wtf is 'The Strokes' and why do I "have to have it" third .. Reputation: ![]() Reputation Power: 4 | thanks. unfortunately the photo isn't on the internet, just the story. here is the story at least. A comical way of saying sorry 11jan02 Life's been tough for comedians after September 11. For a while there, some experts were even speculating humour would be as thin on the ground as the Taliban militia. So, before he begins his Sydney season, comedian Wil Anderson would like to apologise for being trivial. Sort of. "Yeah, I think it is more trivial than some other shows, purposefully, but it still is," he says. Normally, he'd have no fears about straying into "normal comedy topics like death, disaster and war". "But if I start talking about one thing, it seems weird that I'm not talking about September 11 in light of that thing. So then do I keep completely away from it?" he asks. Anderson had a reasonable chance to test out his musings. As co-host of Triple J's national breakfast show, he is afforded an immediacy that can't ignore the stories of the day. And as host of ABC TV's news-analysis comedy series, The Glass House, he, Dave Hughes and Corinne Grant were arguably the first to trade September 11 jokes on television here. "And we were only feeling our own way," Anderson says. "It was hard for us to know because there hadn't been anything like that [before] us. It wasn't like the Challenger [space shuttle] disaster, it wasn't even like Port Arthur." Even now, four months later, it's an issue Anderson still chews on. Consequently, his upcoming show's content is likely to change wildly, even day by day. "I felt like anything that had a half-arsed point – you know, 'Racism is bad!' 'Yeah, nice one Wil, really opened our eyes to that' – in the light of what happened in the world last year, it would appear even more half-arsed," he says. "You had to approach it either pretty full-on, which I feel we did with the TV show, or you had to go the other way a bit and just go 'Right, I'm going to write something that's really fun and just a bit silly.' " And so it is. Anderson has dumped the thematic content for "a bunch of little things I find funny". Add the greater confidence he possesses now as a, well, veteran stand-up and Wil by Mouth promises to be as free-wheeling as Anderson's shows have ever been. And Sydney will see where it all began. "I'm going to do this show here, Adelaide, Melbourne and possibly Edinburgh, and I can see this show, even by Melbourne, that not a word will be the same." But be warned, he notes. "You will see a disproportionate amount of material in my show about news that has happened in the last three weeks," he laughs. Wil By Mouth playsthe Belvoir Street Theatre, Surry Hills, until January 26. Tickets $22/$18. Bookings 9699 3444.

Reputation: ![]() Reputation Power: 4 | There was actually two Wil interviews in the Sun Herald Travel Section: Case Study: Wil Anderson When and where was your first overseas trip? It was an accident. I was looking for a pair of shoes in the back of my wardrobe and stumbled into the magical kingdom of Narnia. What suitcase do you use? As i don't wear suits, i don't have a suitcase. I am looking for someone who manufactures a trackies case. How do you pack? I don't care what i pack, only what position it is packed in- to promote positive feng shui. When do you pack? When mum can find the time. Which book would you take on a plane? The Bible. I find it dissuades complete strangers from wanting to sit next to you and strike up conversations. The most unusual souvenier you've brought back home? I picked up something unusual on a trip to England. But the doctor gave me some tablets and assures me it'll clear up soon. Five items you can't leave home without? My respiratory system, my central nervous system, my circulatory system, my reproductive system and my American Express card. Like my reproductive system, I don't leave home without it. Now another little interview... The Inquisition: Wil Anderson. Timing is everything for comedian Wil Anderson, which is why Wil by Mouth, his new stand-up show at Belvoir St, coincides with his return to 4am starts for his announcing gig on Triple J. How does one combine late nights in a smokey stand-up venue with breakfast radio? It'll be good. I'm hoping the laughs will be so big i'll be able to take mini power naps in between the jokes. Will there be a running theme through this show? Yes- funniness s the theme i've gone for this year. In the past i've had other themes but i really think this will be a winner. I did a show which was just the links between the jokes but that didn't seem to play. I also did one that just featured the punchlines but that didn't work either. Why is there such a discrepancy between the Sydney and Melbourne comedy scene? It's because all people from Melbourne are communists. Sydney people are so much smarter and better looking than Melbourne people. How did you enjoy your brush with the tabloids lat year (courtesy of a short-lives romance with Kate Fischer)? I guess i shouldn't have been hanging out with Robert Downey Jnr so often. He was a mate of mine...well when i say mate, i mean dealer. What are your TV plans this year? I'm hoping to get the Sale of the Century job- that's my big dream. I'm going to take it in a new direction, i'm going t abuse the home viewers a lot more. Both are from the Sun Herald, january 20, 2002. Here are some of the pictures from the Wil by Mouth media night.. If anyone wants to see any of the others email me. Event: Wil Anderson's *Wil by Moyth opening night Site: Belvoir St theatre, Surry Hills Guests: Karl Kruszelnicki, AdamSpencer, Zoe Tryon, Isla Fisher, Penne Dennison, Joanne Ferguson, Claudia Black, Liz Ellis, Jane Mcfadden Goss: Ever been woken up by your mum/partner/whoever after a big night out with the catchphrase "You're missing the best part of the day"? If so, then the wise musings of Triple J host Wil Anderson are just the ammunition you need to return fire the next time your sleep is disturned at such an ungodly hour (night owls unite! ) Anderson also comes in handy for the best belly laugh since, well, the last Belvoir St stand-up - definitely a hot spot this season. Reputation: ![]() Reputation Power: 4 | [b:post_uid0]A new spin on sunrise[/b:post_uid0] He is one of Australia's most popular stand-up comedians. And for the past two years Triple J listeners around Australia have been able to enjoy Wil Anderson's sense of humour on weekday mornings in the show he co-hosts with Adam Spencer. *For Anderson, however, making the move from the stage to breakfast radio has meant a significant lifestyle change. *It's been a huge adjustment, the 28-year-old tells the [i:post_uid0]Guide[/i:post_uid0]. *"I'm now getting up at the same time that I used to get home at! *"It's fair to say that I saw a lot of 3.30 in the morning beforehand, but it was more the end of the day rather than the start of it," he says. *So what is it about stand-up comedians and breakfast radio? *Anderson has a theory: "While stand-up comedians love to give this impression that they're lazy and very casual sort of people, they're actually some of the most driven and insane people I know. *"They're the ones who will get up at 4am five years in a row just because they like telling people jokes. *"And the great thing about doing breakfast," he says, "is that you are the first person in the day to tell a joke. As a comedian, that is very exciting." *Born near Sale, in East Gippsland, Anderson admits he had never listened to an entire breakfast program before his first attempt at co-hosting the show on the ABC's youth network. *"I don't think anyone gets up especially to listen to three hours straight of breakfast radio," he says. *"Most people listen on their way to work or school or while they're getting ready in the morning." *Anderson, who still regularly tours the country performing his routines, has become accustomed to his new hours. *He has also become adept at operating on very little sleep. *"You get to know that there is a danger zone between about 12.30pm and 2pm. *"That is when you're at your grumpiest from being up for so long," he says. *"Therefore, that's not the time to check your mail because if there was a letter from someone who was not exactly a big fan of your work, you'd be in tears for an hour-and-a-half." *In the two years since he began sharing a studio with Spencer, Anderson has formed a solid friendship with his radio partner. *"We probably spend more time together than the person you're in a relationship with. *"We certainly see each other at a more intimate time of the day - you've really got to like someone if you're seeing them at six o'clock in the morning, because otherwise it would show." *As for the future, Anderson sees himself lending his voice and humour to Triple J for some time yet. *"Radio was something I fell into, but now it's pretty much my number one priority," he says. "What I like about radio is the freedom and the fun that Triple J offers. *"And if I felt it was time to move on from here, I might feel it was time to move on from radio altogether." | MOSH Addict | I don't get up 'specially...I just have to get up at 5.30am for work, and start at 8.30am, and get to listen to my walkman all day... So that's 1/2 an hour of the mid-dawn shift, three hours of Breakfast, as much of the Morning Show as I can fit in between having to get up to do things, and the lunch and drive shows if I haven't got an urge to listen to a cd by then. I listen to JJJ a LOT...

Reputation: ![]() Reputation Power: 4 | I admit, I do like listening to the breaky show in the mornings while I'm getting ready for work and driving to the station... but there is NO WAY I would get up especially for it!! :headshak: I mean, don't get me wrong, I think the guys are really funny & I love listening when I get the chance, but there are just certain things that are a tad more annoying than usual at 6am in the morning. eg: Wil's loud and very obnoxious laugh Adam's chirpy "gooooood morning" Not exactly the first thing I like to hear when I've woken up but you get that I suppose ![]()

| MOSH Regular | funny business Herald Sun, THU 14 MAR 2002 By CAMERON ADAMS š š Two electronic jokers talk to CAMERON ADAMS about their crazy lifestyle THEY share a TV show (ABC's The Glass House on Friday nights) and are long-time friends who once shared a flat in Edinburgh. But from 6 to 9 each morning, Dave Hughes and Wil Anderson are breakfast radio rivals: Hughesy on Nova 100 and Anderson on Triple J. However, Anderson is quick to play down any bad frequency on the Melbourne airwaves. ``Dave works on a commercial station that will play Destiny's Child next to Foo Fighters. I work for a national radio station that targets a certain type of music. ``I think you make a choice about a station. Someone who hates ads, loves alternative music and hates Destiny's Child isn't going to go `Well, I like Hughesy, I'm going to listen to him anyway'. I'd love it if we rated eight in Melbourne like Nova . . . but better Hughesy than (Triple M's Steve) Bedders!'' And unlike Hughesy, Anderson can swear all he likes. In fact, it seems almost mandatory on Triple J. ``I said the C-word once by mistake,'' Anderson says. ``And the great thing about Triple J is that I said it by mistake and we didn't get one complaint call!'' As major personalities in the breakfast radio world, both men are used to the world of afternoon naps, 4am alarms and being in bed at nanna-friendly hours. But when they juggle stand-up shows (Hughesy's Whatever and Anderson's Wil By Mouth) later this month, both men will be on air each morning longer than they sleep each night. ``I just played some stand-up shows in Adelaide and I wasn't coming off stage until 10.30pm, not going to bed until about 12.30pm and then getting up at 3.30am and going, `Right, I'm going to die','' Anderson says. It upholds the truism that comedy is the new rock and roll. ``Yeah, it's all crowd surfing, not washing and sleeping with groupies. Except for, none of that happens,'' Anderson says. Hughesy: ``I'm a zombie in the afternoon. It's very easy to get angry about things during the day.'' Anderson: ``It's that period between 1-3 in the afternoon. You didn't upsize my fries! Right, I'm going to shoot people.'' There is a definite business side to funny business. Both have become multi-media comedians, who have done TV ads and corporate work. ``Audiences are audiences,'' Hughesy says. ``Those (corporate) crowds are dying for laughter,'' Anderson adds. ``They've sat through their general manager's speech for 40 minutes, they're gagging for a few jokes.'' While both will complain about the hours of breakfast radio, they'll both admit they're incredibly lucky. ``I complain about not having time to do everything and not sleeping much,'' Anderson says. ``The other day my friend said `So, what are you going to drop? Your national radio show? Your national TV show? Your national stand-up tours? And I thought, `Yep, I'll just shut my mouth and pull my head in'.'' Hughesy: ``We both did stand-up for free a few years ago, so to get paid for it, and quite well, is great.'' Anderson: ``I have two ABC jobs so I almost get a whole wage.'' While they're comedy festival veterans, they also remember the days where they were in the rooms that seat 50 people and often just playing to two people: their parents. ``I'm just happy to have an audience,'' Hughesy says. ``You can't beat it. If you don't do it for a while you certainly miss it.'' ``It's pretty easy to remember why you like doing it,'' Anderson says. ``I think stand-up keeps you sharp. On the radio you can fool yourself. You think, `I am so hilarious, that guy in the studio is laughing his head off, I'm sure there are people running their cars off the road at how funny that thing I just said was'. ``But to be honest, when you get in front of a room full of people at a stand-up show, you find out pretty quick if you're funny or not. And there's a real appeal to that.'' Speaking of appeal, are there comedy groupies? ``You mean jokies?'' Anderson says. ``I've heard myths, but like the magical kingdom of Narnia I've never seen much existence of it.'' Anderson wears nailpolish, something only male rockstars can usually get away with. He says it's to stop him biting his nails, but Hughesy admits he's often asked why his comedy counterpart paints up. ``I got this present the other day and it was 30 bottles of nail polish,'' Anderson says. ``That's great, when someone thinks of buying me a present they think of bulk quantities of nail polish. I am such a manly man, I'm going to spend the rest of my day with my a . . .crack out, spitting and building stuff out of wood.'' Both have sorted out their comedy festival shows. Hughesy's is called Whatever, and anyone who has listened to him will know why. ``Whatever is an attitude thing,'' he says. And in the tradition of Wilennium, I Am the Wilrus and Who Wants to Be a Wilionaire Wil's new show is Wil By Mouth. ``As long as I can keep finding Wil puns I'll keep using them, otherwise I'll change my name.'' What about Licensed to Wil? ``I'm putting it on my list. You've just inflicted another show on the people of Melbourne. Next year's is of course Jagged Little Wil.'' Finally, in the Oprah moment of the interview, what do they think are the best qualities of each other? ``Wil has become one of the best comedians in the country through being smart and working hard,'' Hughesy says. Likewise, Anderson regularly calls Hughesy Australia's best stand-up comic. ``His relaxed style might have been something that wouldn't fit into the conventions of what people see as the style for TV and radio. But he has taken something so individual and made it so powerful and so demanding that it's created its own niche in those fields.'' ``Thanks a lot,'' says Hughesy. ``You should write my press release.'' ``But we both hate (Glass House cohort) Corinne (Grant),'' says Anderson. ``She's sh. . .house.'' Whatever, March 28-April 20, Assembly Hall, 156 Collins St. Wil By Mouth, April 2-April 21, Melbourne Town Hall. Tickets for both shows available through Ticketmaster 7. The Glass House, ABC TV, 8pm Fridays. | ||
