McDermott to host AFI awards

Article found in SMH 27/11:

Guests, giggles and glamour planned
November 27 2002

Comedian Paul McDermott will host next month's Australian Film Institute Awards in Melbourne, organisers announced yesterday.

The singer, songwriter, dancer, comedian and former host of comedy-variety TV show Good News Week, will entertain a live audience of 1500 at Melbourne's Princess Theatre on December 7.

The event will also be televised live by Network Ten.

The star-studded list of guest presenters for the event will include Sarah O'Hare, Eric Bana, Claudia Karvan, Vince Colosimo, Belinda Emmett and Joel Edgerton.

The AFI said it would announce more guest presenters soon.

Two vastly different films, one by an internationally celebrated director and the other by a first feature film director, have received the most nominations, leading up to the event.

Phillip Noyce's historical drama, Rabbit Proof Fence, has scored 10 nominations while Walking on Water by Tony Ayres, has nine.

The clash of black and white culture is the focus of four films vying for Best Film: Australian Rules, Beneath Clouds, Rabbit Proof Fence and The Tracker.

Judy Davis (Swimming Upstream), Rachel Griffiths (The Hard Word) Dannielle Hall (Beneath Clouds) and Maria Theodorakis (Walking on Water) are the nominees in the Best Actress category.

Vince Colosimo (Walking on Water), David Gulpilil (The Tracker), Geoffrey Rush (Swimming Upstream) and David Wenham (Molokai: The Story of Father Damien), are the nominees for the Best Actor category.

Verona, sorry luv didn't realise you'd posted the article reference up already. Interesting though that they can publish Wednesday's article on Tuesday. Most of Sydney's weekend paper is published and at the newsagents on Friday.

Herald Sun (The Guide) singing the praises of Paul

In today's Herald Sun (The Guide liftout) 04-12-02, Melbourne, there are a few mini snippets featuring Paul and some small pictures (which aren't great or anything). Basically all referring to the AFI awards. What is it with the Herald Sun all of a sudden singing Paul's praises in the space of a couple of pages?! Repetition not a bonus.

Page 2:
McDermott delivers off a short run

He sees it as a heck of a challenge, but Paul McDermott has never walked away from a challenge.
The former GNW star, who most recently wowed audiences in his starring role in the stage musical The Witches of Eastwick , returns to the small screen to host this week's AFI Awards , from Melbourne's Princess Theatre.
"They signed me only a couple of weeks ago, so it's been a case of working frantically with the writers to get some material together", he says.
The Australian film industry's night of nights will feature musical performances by Archie Roach and Sarah McGregor, highlighting music from the soundtracks of nominated films Walking on Water and The Tracher
This year the awards will screen on Ten, with the network hoping to inject some much-needed sizzles.
Highlight will be an appearance by Belinda Emmett after an enforced break through her battle with cancer.
"With people like Belinda, Sarah O'Hare, Kerry Armstrong, Bill Hunter, Claudia Karvan and Vince Colosimo on stage, we should have a great night," McDermott says.

**** (four stars rating)

Special. Grab the matchsticks to keep the peeper's open, folks, because you'll need them. But if Paul McDermott's AFI Award hosting is as energetic and entertaining as his stunning performance in the stage show Witches of Eastwick , then it will be worth waiting up for.
This is the Australian movie industry's night of nights, which also tosses off a few token award morsels to TV. The problem is that often the TV award decisions are laughable.
Enjoy McDermott and pray the speeches aren't as boring as last year.

Special. Paul McDermott hosts the AFI Awards from Melbourne's Princess Theatre. It's all about showcasing the best in Australian film and television, but every now and then it tosses up the odd television category choice. Tonight, it's Kath and Kim being nominated for drama, which will satisfy anyone who couldn't raise a laugh while watching it. I laughed, so I reckon it's dumb, but what would I know. McDermott will be terrific.

Why does he need writers we all know that it's funny when he's winging it, and also that way we're guaranteed to get lines we already know

Ahhh, at last the truth comes out.

Witches of Eastwick was cancelled because Paul had entirely too much wowie sauce.

He needs writer's because it's meant to be a fairly formal affair, I think? All the pretentious film makers might get offended if he dropped the F-word during his ad-lib?

I have absolutly nothing against Belinda Emmett, and I'm really sorry she had cancer, but why will it be a highlight? Has she done something of note that I'm not aware of? And it's not like it's been a total hiatis while she was having cancer treatment. She's been on heaps of shows recently, hasn't she?

Once again, I have nothing against her, I just don't get it.

Well there is the nugget - but i think its just because everybody knows that she has cancer she gets kind of sympathy followers- like anthony warlow.

I like her too, but she wouldnt be as famous as she is if her illness wasnt so interesting to our morbid society

Yeah, I assumed that. But I was naive enough to think that the AFIs would have a bit more integrity than, say, the Logies. Evidently not. But I guess channel ten would be choosing the hosts.
