Wow thanks for putting up the article. That is probably the best I've read for ages. There seemed to be a real rythym between interviewer and suject. Except for the bear suit I reckon it'll be a fantastic short film.

No, your life, or your job rather, is to take tons of pictures for obsessive fans like myself. You to such a good job at it too. (I'm not sucking up for updates and more pictures at all. Of course not)

It's a brilliant (if deeply disturbing) book - and that has nothing to do with my penchant for the author, I swear.
Have you read The Bees? I love that one even more, as does my daughter which some people think is wrong, but hey.

Local Paul Article.

Strictly dancing over the line of good taste.
Paul McDermott has traded cutting-edge satire for fancy frills.
By Rebecca Te'o
The Chronicle Entertainment Weekly, May 13 - 19

Channel 10 has an awful lot to answer for. Cases in point: Jerry Springer, Kenneth Copeland and those other, more persistent, evangelicals from Danoz Direct.

There is also Big Brother and his heinous younger siblings: Big Brother Up-Late, Big Brother Uncut, Big Brother Housemate Secrets.

Yet with all these trophies displayed for any village idiot to watch (again and again), the broadcaster has committed no greater sin than when it ripped the heart out of Paul McDermott and turned him into someone your Nan would refer to as "that nice young man".

Paul McDermott's demise began when his subversive (and just-a-little-silly) Friday night show Good News Week was picked up by Channel 10 from it's home on the ABC.

The commercial channel tweaked it until it was more like a variety show than the show we'd all come to love - biting, insightful and just plain funny.

We left the ABC in droves faithfully tuning in to Channel 10 until it all got too self-indulgent, too watered-down and way too embarrassing.

The new segments that were introduced and Paul's penchant for belting out a number or two throughout just became one big yawn.

Then, blissfully, it stopped.

Paul disappeared off our screens for a little while, appearing only in small slots on comedy festival broadcasts, televised debating and stand-up.

Now he's back on Aunty with his own gig, Strictly Dancing (ABC, Friday, 8pm), but there's something seriously amiss.

I love a good foxtrot as much as the next person, but there's something haunting about watching Paul McDermott - that hard-bitten, cynical, potty-mouthed satirist of my youth - frocked up in frills and a cummerbund acting the fop while badly bedazzled whirling dervishes clamour desperately for a piece of the limelight.

OK, maybe that's a bit harsh, but there's no disputing Paul is now more Simon Gallagher than Doug Anthony All Star.

That's right - Pauley is a right royal fop.

He's the Scarlet Pimpernel of the samba, the Liberace of the lambada, the Danny la Rue of dance.

Paul Mercurio meets Baz Luhrman meets your seedy uncle who always turns up drunk at weddings.

Aunty, we beseech you: bring back the old Paul.

Give him an ungagged gig, let him loose on our screens once again - and above all, burn that bloody cummerbund.

He's in serious danger of being overcooked in the melting pot of mainstream.

And some things, like Paul, are better enjoyed raw.

Bwahahaha! Ah dear...sounds like the pain of a bitter, disillusioned old Dougs fan *g*

Also, sounds like someone who hasn't seen Gud lately *g*

I do sympathise. There's something, oddly wrong, about McDermott hosting a ballroom dancing show *g* But at the same time, I've got to point out that he's ALWAYS been a bit of a fop *g*

And it's not like he doesn't get to let the anger rip anymore, he just does it in a sleazy lounge-singer style with Gud. Besides, he's getting on a bit *snickers* a man his age can't be expected to be as loud and aggressive as he used to be...*eg*

*re-reads the article to giggle some more at the phrase "right royal fop"*

Mom: Well, we could join together in prayer.
Son: Uh huh. Is there anything useful we can do?
Mom: No.

I think it may be someone who has seen Gud and is annoyed because they're not the Dougs. 'that bloody cummerbund' hasn't been worn on Strictly Dancing and if he burnt it what would keep his stomache in.

It's a little bit vitriolic but pretty much on the money, I'd say. He's gettin' old and goin' soft - not that there's anything wrong with that, lifestyle-wise

Has she still got it bad for him or what.

I think he's actually being professional with Strictly Dancing and it suites the shows format. The show isn't all about Paul, it's about the dance and the dancers and I think that is what Paul is trying to bring out. I do however feel that there is a little spark that is missing with Paul lately but nothing that a bit of rubbing and friction wouldn't fix...the lambada.
