| MOSH Elite | Illawarra Mercury 7th October 2004 By Glen Humphries PAUL McDERMOTT, one-third of GUD Do you remember how it went the first time you appeared onstage? It was extraordinary. What an experience. I went to an all-male school and, because I was a pretty boy, the brothers at the school dressed me up as a Tahaitian girl. I remember I had coconuts for breasts and a straw skirt that my mother put endless hours of energy into. It scarred me for goddamn life, that experience. Ever pay attention to critical reviews of your work? People write stuff all the time and I think it's great that people write stuff. But by jingo, by crikey, I'd really like some of those critics to get out in front of an audience and see if they could do anything at all apart from wet their pissy little pants. What do you think of reality television? It's great. I love it. It's wonderful. It gives people an opportunity, albeit briefly, to experience life on the other side of the camera. Have you ever been one of those people who talk during a movie? No, I loathe that. That is really one of my hates. I have struck people for talking. Is there an album in your collection you wished you'd never bought? I wish, at the age of 12, my grandmother had never given me Jamie Redfern's Up and Away in My Beautiful Balloon. Even the title I thought was offensive. Have you ever kept a diary? Yes. Well, it's not so much a diary but I keep journals of thoughts I have. I've got hundreds of them but they're mainly full of drawings, scribbles and ideas. But when you dig back into them, I can pretty much remember the day I existed in that moment. | ||

Reputation: ![]() Reputation Power: 7 | GUD proves to be better than good - Show a sell-out at festival By JENNIE JONES The Daily Telegraph 02/12/2004 Comedian Cameron Bruce likes to put himself down. Not only does he claim to drift from job to job like a "floating stick'' but he describes himself as easily talked into things, having no goals or ambitions and not having a clue what makes him funny. But GUD, his stand-up show also featuring Paul McDermott and Mick Moriarty, was a sell-out at the Melbourne comedy festival. Tomorrow the trio will perform at the Mingara Recreation Club. Much of the two-set show will consist of humorous songs penned by Bruce and his colleagues as well as stand-up comedy and general banter. "It's basically three guys on stage mucking about,'' said Bruce, 27. "Some people have found some of our shows a bit offensive and have got up and left. Our shows are absolute garbage.'' Brought up in Avoca, Bruce first took to the stage with a school rock band. At Sydney University he studied for a degree in maths, then embarked on a music career which saw him work with artists including Tim Freedman, Jenny Morris and Paul Greene and bands The Polaroids, Club Luna and The Karma County. One of his highlights was playing on the main stage of the Big Day Out 2003 with rock band Waikiki. But his foray into comedy came after meeting McDermott and Moriarty in a sushi bar in Bondi. "Our chopsticks clashed as we rushed for the same dish,'' he said. "And I was then talked into doing the show.'' In 2002, they held their first show, Hard Core Cabaret, at Sydney University. But a lack of preparation and an unsympathetic audience nearly spelled the end of the venture. "They hated us,'' said Bruce. "It was horrible. I ended up walking off stage -- I reckon I'd have been lynched if I stayed.'' But he decided to persevere with the comedy -- as long as he could keep his keyboard on stage. "I couldn't go on stage without it,'' he said. "Some people feel naked without their clothes on. I feel naked without my keyboard.'' As for the future, Bruce has no ambitions. "I've never had a plan or goal in life,'' he said. "Anything I achieve is a bonus.''

Reputation: ![]() Reputation Power: 4 | Appeal Profits with Gud Humour. Herald Sun Friday 25 March 2005 Normally, when the three of them get together, it's enough to frighten children. Send them screaming to their mothers, in fact. But yesterday Paul McDermott, Cameron Bruce and Mick Moriarty returned to their comedy roots and went out busking. The lads, now performing as comic satirists with a bit of song thrown in and calling themselves Gud, threw their hats on the ground at Southbank and did their thing. They made a bit of money for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal as well, but we're not 100 per cent certain whether people were tossing them a dollar for the RCH, or out of sympathy for the lads, or to make them shut up and go away. Whatever. The RCH appeal was the winner. This was in the eye section, there was also a picture of Paul and Cam. Also, has anyone else seen the tv ad for Gud. It shows bits of footage from their appearances on Stand Up! and Galas.
