In all seriousness I thoroughly enjoyed the show...AGAIN! I know the material is not entirely new, and I know what to expect but I still laugh my ass off. Who cares if it's not new, Greg Fleet's still telling us about Kurt Douglas' son...and yeah it's still funny. I don't quite understand when these boys are supposed to find the time to sit down and write all new material in between running the rest of their lives. Any other concert I go to see I expect the same if not similar content night after night, why should it be any different for comedy? If you want to laugh you will. If you don't want to laugh but would rather pick the show to pieces then you can do that too. I don't see the problem? If you wait a while between shows maybe something new will pop up, or maybe you'll have left enough time to have forgotten much of the content, I don't know. I'd go back tomorrow if I could, then I know the content would be relatively the same...but really, what do I know?

I went to tonights performance. It was a mix of the funny and a little flat in parts where I've heard it before or they just went a bit too long with the same joke. The slap stick was OK. I could have done without Cameron asking the audience to rate the show thus far and well the alcohol was just wearing off for me and most likely others, where as there was beer a plenty on stage. This drew attention to what was now a flat bit in the show and the boys had to work at getting the tempo up again. It ended well with the Michael Jackson song which was fun. Those that had seen Paul at tapings at GNW and other places and find his raport with the fans somewhat lacking will be pleased to know that not only did he in Pied Piper fashion lead us out of the Studio but farewelled the whole audience personally with a handshake or a very big hug. (I got a handshake) aaaaannnnndddd was happy to sign autographs and speak to fans. BIG IMPROVEMENT PAUL. I saw GUD last year at the Metro and I think the show has improved as they are more confident and their material is a little less harsh in character but probably lacking the excitement of the new. I would have liked to see some of those "Strictly Dancers" or Paul playing on the show a little. I almost heckled "Strictly Dancing" when Paul was bagging show and advertisements for shows. But I restrained myself as I had when Paul mentioned "the girl at the back tonight you look very pretty tonight" needless to say I only just managed to stop my finger from reaching the back of my throat. Nautiaus and OK a little jealous.

"I wrote visceral, comic songs and performed them in a three-part harmony. Even when the Doug Anthonys had stopped I kept doing those things. I feel comfortable singing, and singing about filthy, depraved topics." (From the 'Gud on you Paul' article) My thoughts flashed to the future...I now have this image of pensioner Paul in my head singing his songs on a park bench to passers by.

| Poetry in motion By Des Partridge Courier Mail 26/07/2004 The versatility of comic, musician, actor, presenter and poet Paul McDermott includes filmmaking, writes Des Partridge PAUL McDermott has shown a surprising range of talents since becoming known as a member of the versatile comedy-music troupe Doug Anthony All-Stars in the 1980s. He currently performs with the GUD comedy trio (ending a series of shows at Perth's Playhouse at the weekend). He's entertained the nation on television shows such as The Big Gig and Good News Week and the current ABC Friday night hit Strictly Dancing. On stage, he performed in the musical The Witches of Eastwick, and he spends his spare time writing children's poems. He comes to Brisbane tomorrow in the guise of filmmaker. McDermott will be at the opening of the 13th Brisbane International Film Festival where his first short film, The Scree, screens with the night's main attraction, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, starring Geoffrey Rush, Charlize Theron and Emily Watson. McDermott said from Perth that the 15-minute film, funded by the New South Wales Film and Television Office and the Australian Film Commission, had taken more than two years to complete. "When you make a short film you and your friends work for free, but everyone had jobs, so we had to fit making the film into whatever free time we could find together,'' says McDermott, who was based in Melbourne for six months working on The Witches of Eastwick while his film collaborators were in Sydney. A friend (the film's producer and director of photography Justine Kerrigan) suggested he turn his gothic children's poem about the mysterious scree into a short film. "Justine always said we'd make the film and we'd send it to the Berlin International Film Festival, and that's exactly how it turned out. The short is a mix of film and animation, and has a distinctive look that McDermott (who appears in the story) says was influenced by Victorian-era children's stories. The distinctive narration is read by the late Ruth Cracknell, who had had a professional association with McDermott going back to Good News Week. "She had the most sumptuous voice and I always knew it would be no one but Ruth who would do the narration. She died not long after it was completed,'' he said. While declaring himself a fan of actor Geoffrey Rush's work, McDermott is yet to meet him. "I'm excited that I'm getting the opportunity to meet such a talented actor,'' he said. | ||

The West Online 20/07/2004 McDermott in a hurry RON BANKS Paul McDermott admits to being "busier than usual" on his various projects as television compere, writer, musician, comedian and even filmmaker. His short film Scree, which he wrote and directed from one of his children's stories, was selected for showing at this year's Berlin Film Festival. Its success in Berlin, even though it didn't win a prize, prompted the United Nations to request its screening in a festival it is organising to promote educational values. The UN invitation has puzzled McDermott somewhat though because he doesn't see how a film about five childlike adventurers who find themselves on an island and then get eaten fits in with UN values. Nevertheless, McDermott is happy with the film's success and is looking forward to it doing the rounds of other film festivals. In the meantime he has been shooting the next series of the ABC's Strictly Dancing, writing his column for the Age newspaper and somehow finding the time to fit in tours with his trio Gud, which comes to Perth at the weekend. Gud's first performance tomorrow is sold out, not surprising given the high profile of McDermott and the talents of guitarist Mick Moriarty and keyboard player Cameron Bruce, who form the other part of Gud. The trio has enjoyed success around Australia and won a new following overseas when the three appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Its success in Edinburgh led to invitations to tour Britain, which McDermott thinks will probably happen next year. Gud also won the Age Critics' award for best music comedy act and there are plans to record a DVD of one of its shows. McDermott says the recording had originally been scheduled for Hobart's historic old Theatre Royal but a few loose ends still have to be tied up before this can happen. While Gud continues to tour on a sporadic basis, he hopes the group will be used as the basis for a new television show that combines its comedy songs with other satirical material. When not performing on stage McDermott spends much of his time as a writer, not only on his children's books but on scripts and scenarios that can provide the basis for comedy series or sitcoms. He says several projects are in various stages of development and he has been talking to both the ABC and the commercial networks about the possibilities of new series. "As an artist and performer you've got to be working on several fronts at once and hope that at least one of them comes up," he says. If it all gets too much for him, he says, he likes to go off and paint, which was his first love. "I only started performing to earn money to buy canvases," says McDermott, who studied at the Canberra School of Art. "It was either that or waiting on tables and I thought I'd soon get pissed off with people doing that. So we'd go busking and that's the kind of experience that makes you able to cope with any situation once you get into the clubs."
